Social media and the three registers — Işık Barış Fidaner

(Turkish)

Today’s social media sites cover Lacan’s three registers:

Imaginary (Instagram), Symbolic (Facebook), Real (Twitter)

1) Instagram is imaginary because people re-enact the mirror stage by exchanging images.
2) Facebook is symbolic because people declare and support their symbolic ties (work, love, etc.).
3) Twitter is real because there is an interdiction of length (every tweet is max 280 characters) and people inter-dit (speak between the lines, it’s called subtweeting).
