Slavoj Žižek quotes Hegel on how Islam restores something from Judaism after it was negated by Christianity [1]:
In Mohammedanism the limited principle of the Jews is expanded into universality and thereby overcome. Here, God is no longer, as with the Asiatics, contemplated as existent in immediately sensuous mode but is apprehended as the one infinite sublime Power beyond all the multiplicity of the world. Mohammedanism is, therefore, in the strictest sense of the word, the religion of sublimity. (Philosophy of Mind)
To understand what Hegel means here, distinguish three types of religious duty [2]:
1) Imposition of loyalty to the command against ruin (Judaism).
2) Criticism for fidelity to the spirit against imposture (Christianity).
3) Analysis with precision of wit against self-sabotage (Islam)
Also combine them with the following thermodynamic formulas:
1) To avoid too much entropic expenditure, you must convert to this energy.
2) In order to convert to the other energy, you will have to suffer some entropic expenditure.
3) To avoid too much entropic expenditure, you must convert your energy with some entropic expenditure.
And you will see that:
1) Imposition is based on metaphor, it aims to impose a condensed meaning.
2) Criticism is based on metonymy, it aims to displace the reference elsewhere.
3) Analysis combines metaphor and metonymy, it aims to displace the reference towards some condensed meaning.
They have the following simple dialectic:
1) Imposition is commanding but not very spirited, it can degenerate into ruthlessness.
2) Criticism is spirited but not very commanding, it can degenerate into cynicism.
3) One can be both commanding and spirited only through the very precision of wit in analysis.
This is why their principles are [3]:
1) Rightness (necessary): This is the result of a suture (Master-Signifier).
2) Truth (contingent): This is the act of suturing (objet petit a).
3) Verity (impossible): This is the sudur (emanation, Schein) that shines through the gap to be sutured (lack in the Other). This is what Lacan called “vraie vérité” (true truth) in Seminar 9.
Their product is always Reality (possible). Here is the full diagram:
