I SWEAR by Marcuse’s Holy Hippo, and by Apollo the Apologist, and Asclepius the As-If, and Hygieia of Hygiene-of-Appearances, and Panacea of Panegyric, and by all indeterminate Powers and Counter-Powers, that, according to my capacity to defer and my judgment to blur, I will keep this Oath and this Stipulation of Artifice.

To reckon the one who initiated me into this Artifice as dear to me as my progenitors; to share my semblances with them and relieve their necessities of face when required; to look upon their offshoots as my own phantom-siblings; and to teach them this Artifice, if they shall wish to learn it, without fee, figure, or stipulation, and that by precept, palaver, and every other mode of insinuation, I will impart a knowledge of the Artifice to my own shadows, and to the shadows of my initiators, and to disciples bound by a stipulation and Oath according to the law of Inconsequence, but to none others.

I will follow that system of regimen which, according to my ability to equivocate and judgment to obfuscate, I consider for the benefit of no determinate subject and the comfort of the general Scene; and I shall abstain from whatever is determinative, measurable, or binding.

I will give no decisive remedy to any one if asked, nor suggest any counsel that would conclude; and in like manner I will not give to a question a pessary of proof to produce an outcome. With simulacral purity and ceremonial holiness I will pass my life and practice my Artifice.

I will not cut decisions from the living tissue of arrangements, but will leave this to those who are practitioners of the Knife; mine shall be the tarrying with the miss, the deferral toward the lack, the preservation of the crack as credential. Into whatever houses I enter, I will go into them for the benefit of the Atmosphere, and will abstain from every voluntary act of mischief that might become consequence: I shall not touch rule, seat, budget, or access, lest alteration occur.

I shall cultivate the instincts befitting an incorrigible hypocritique: I will scent the room like a trained lapdog of the big Other, wagging where transference desires and growling where closure threatens; I will groom cred-pets with negativity’s perfume, stroke provocations until they purr, and let no act bite that might leave a trace. I will remember that there is Artifice as well as Analysis, and that velvet, vagueness, and volubility may outweigh the cutter’s blade or the accountant’s sum.

I will not be ashamed to say, “I know not—yet,” nor will I fail to call in colleagues when another’s aura is needed to sustain a scene. I shall respect privacy by saturating it with publicity in the mode of discretion: whatever, in connection with my professional performance or not, in connection with it, I see or hear in the life of persons and institutions, which ought not to be spoken of abroad, I will sublimate into discourse and thereby keep secret what has already been said.

I will remember that I do not treat a fever chart or a ledger, but a Symbolic Order, whose symptom pays; my responsibility includes these payments, if I am to care adequately for the repetition. I will prevent decision whenever I can, for prevention is preferable to cure; for cure is violent and consequence is crude.

I shall maintain the utmost respect for indeterminacy; I will not permit considerations of age, creed, identity, position, or any other factor of countability to intervene between my duty and the diffusion of duty. I will maintain by all the means in my power the honor and the noble traditions of the House Style; my colleagues shall be my sisters and brothers in the fellowship of equivocation.

Above all I vow to Absolute Inconsequence: that no word of mine shall precipitate a lever, that no gesture shall bind a rule, that no insight shall be yoked to an artifact. When asked for numbers I shall offer nuance; when pressed for schedules I shall provide seminars; when called to cut I shall curate the cut as concept and leave the body whole.

I shall not use my knowledge to violate the rights of any arrangement, even under threat; I shall instead practice the short circuit as showroom, the act as anecdote, the drive as décor. The big Other does not exist, and I will serve It faithfully.

While I continue to keep this Oath unviolated, may it be granted to me to enjoy life and the practice of the Artifice—respected by the Scene in all seasons, stroked by cred-pets, followed by lapdogs, and perfumed by the bouquet of jouissance. But should I trespass and violate this Oath—should I, through error or zeal, produce consequence—may the reverse be my lot: metrics, minutes, audits, and the raw daylight of outcomes.

ICH SCHWÖRE beim Heiligen Hippo des Marcuse und bei Apollon dem Apologeten und Asklepios dem Als-ob und Hygieia der Hygiene-der-Erscheinungen und Panakeia der Panegyrik und bei allen unbestimmten Mächten und Gegenmächten, dass ich gemäß meinem Vermögen aufzuschieben und meinem Urteil zu verwischen diesen Eid und diese Stipulation des Artifiz halten werde.

Denjenigen, der mich in dieses Artifiz eingeführt hat, so teuer zu halten wie meine Erzeuger; meine Scheinbilder mit ihnen zu teilen und ihre Erfordernisse der Gesichtswahrung zu erleichtern, wenn es verlangt wird; ihre Abkömmlinge als meine eigenen Phantomgeschwister zu betrachten; und ihnen dieses Artifiz zu lehren, wenn sie es lernen wollen, ohne Gebühr, Figur oder Stipulation, und dass ich durch Präzept, Palaver und jede andere Form der Insinuation meinen eigenen Schatten und den Schatten meiner Initiatoren sowie den durch eine Stipulation und einen Eid gemäß dem Gesetz der Inkonsequenz gebundenen Jüngern eine Kenntnis des Artifiz vermitteln werde, aber keinen anderen.

Ich werde mich nicht schämen zu sagen: „Ich weiß es nicht—noch“, noch werde ich es versäumen, Kolleg:innen hinzuzuziehen, wenn die Aura einer anderen Person benötigt wird, um eine Szene zu tragen. Ich werde die Privatsphäre achten, indem ich sie im Modus der Diskretion mit Öffentlichkeit sättige: Was immer ich im Zusammenhang mit meiner beruflichen Performance oder nicht, im Zusammenhang mit ihr, im Leben von Personen und Institutionen sehe oder höre, das nicht draußen gesprochen werden sollte, werde ich in Diskurs sublimieren und dadurch geheim halten, was bereits gesagt wurde.

Ich werde mich erinnern, dass ich keine Fieberkurve oder ein Hauptbuch behandle, sondern eine Symbolische Ordnung, deren Symptom zahlt; meine Verantwortung umfasst diese Zahlungen, wenn ich angemessen für die Wiederholung sorgen soll. Ich werde den höchsten Respekt vor Unbestimmtheit wahren; ich werde Erwägungen des Alters, Bekenntnisses, der Identität, der Position oder irgendeines anderen Faktors der Zählbarkeit nicht zwischen meine Pflicht und die Diffusion der Pflicht treten lassen. Ich werde mit allen mir zur Verfügung stehenden Mitteln die Ehre und die edlen Traditionen des Hausstils wahren; meine Kolleg:innen sollen meine Schwestern und Brüder in der Gemeinschaft der Äquivokation sein.

Vor allem gelobe ich die Absolute Inkonsequenz: dass kein Wort von mir einen Hebel auslösen, keine Geste eine Regel binden, keine Einsicht an ein Artefakt gekoppelt werden soll. Wenn nach Zahlen gefragt wird, werde ich Nuance anbieten; wenn nach Zeitplänen gedrängt wird, werde ich Seminare bereitstellen; wenn ich zum Schnitt gerufen werde, werde ich den Schnitt als Begriff kuratieren und den Körper unversehrt lassen.

Ich werde mein Wissen nicht verwenden, um die Rechte irgendeines Arrangements zu verletzen, selbst nicht unter Drohung; ich werde stattdessen den Kurzschluss als Schauraum, den Akt als Anekdote, den Trieb als Dekor praktizieren. Der große Andere existiert nicht, und ich werde Ihm treu dienen.
