Introduction

Until a very short time ago, the idea of removing children from the digital world was presented as an exaggerated, harsh, even reactionary response. Today, the situation has reversed. For several years, it was said that giving children screens at earlier ages, introducing them to the internet earlier, would prepare them for the future; that the faster they entered the digital environment, the more advantaged they would be; that they needed to internalize technology early in order not to fall behind. In this way, connecting children to digital systems as early as possible and as deeply as possible was normalized by hiding behind the language of progress. Yet this normalization did not sufficiently question under what conditions childhood itself was in fact being reorganized.

Today, the phone in a child’s hand does not resemble the simple means of communication of former times. That device is, at once, a system that captures attention, steers mood, recommends consumption, imposes social comparison, collects data, distributes visibility, suppresses loneliness, instantly eliminates boredom, and continually calls the child back. What sits in a child’s pocket is not merely a screen; it is a portable environment that constantly intervenes in the child’s time, attention, sleep, socialization, and sense of self. For this reason, the debate is no longer merely a debate about screen time. The real question is at what intensity, at what age, under what conditions, and under what regimes of protection digital systems should enter children’s lives.

To understand the importance of this transformation, one must first see this: the digital world did not remain a harmless auxiliary sphere added later to children’s lives. It ceased to be a tool standing around the edges of daily life; it settled inside childhood itself. Friendship, play, lessons, the time before sleep, boredom, waiting, fear of exclusion, the desire to be visible, the mode of comparing oneself, and even the relationship one establishes with silence all began to be shaped by the screen. The child no longer enters the internet only when necessary. The internet seeps into every moment in which the child finds an opening; it operates as a flow designed to leave no openings.

The problem is not that children encounter technology. The problem is that, during the most developmentally vulnerable period of childhood, they are directly exposed to attention systems optimized for commercial interests. It was already strange in itself that a digital environment which is exhausting even for adults, produces dependency, erodes patience, and creates a constant desire to return could be treated as neutral for children. At a time when childhood is still trying to establish its own boundaries, its own patience, its own sense of worth, and its own rhythm of attention, leaving it exposed to systems that disrupt precisely these elements began to appear not as protection but as a form of abandonment.

For this reason, a striking rupture is taking place worldwide. In the past, the debate revolved more around advice within the family. It was said that screen time should be limited, the child should be spoken with, balance should be established, and the internet should be used consciously. This approach has not disappeared entirely, but it is now clearly found insufficient. Because leaving children in the middle of platforms, notifications, recommendation algorithms, short-video feeds, and the economy of social pressure, while loading all responsibility onto the parent and the child’s self-control, has increasingly begun to look unrealistic. According to UNESCO’s data, the proportion of education systems worldwide that implement national-scale bans or serious restrictions on mobile phones at school increased sharply in a very short time (🔗). This datum alone says something important: the issue is no longer a scattered cultural unease; it is a global shift in direction that has begun to produce institutional countermeasures.

Behind this shift in direction there is a much more material accumulation than moral panic. Sleep is being disrupted, attention is being scattered, deep reading is becoming difficult, the rhythm of learning is being worn down, children are physically together but mentally disconnected from one another, the pressure of visibility is increasing, and cyberbullying and privacy violation are becoming ordinary parts of daily life. Moreover, a large part of this proceeds not like a sudden collapse, but like a stealthy dissolution. A child does not wake up one morning having become a completely different person. But over days, weeks, and months, the supporting elements of childhood—rhythm, patience, the ability to be bored, the ability to occupy oneself, the ability to make up games, and the capacity to really look at the person in front of one—grow thinner. This was also part of why the harm went unnoticed for so long: the damage arrived not by exploding, but by accumulating.

The OECD’s comprehensive 2025 report on children’s lives in the digital age clearly shows that the digital environment must be evaluated not merely as a field of opportunity, but together with headings such as risk, harm, and problematic use (🔗). This is no longer merely an academic finding; it is also a transformation reflected in state policies. On one side, the de-phonification of schools; on another, the raising of the social media age threshold; on another, age verification and design restrictions on children’s accounts; and elsewhere, family and public-health guidelines aimed at reducing device use in the evening and at night all point in the same direction. All these steps show that children’s relationship with the digital world is no longer regarded as innocent enough to be left unregulated.

To understand the effect of digital systems on childhood, one must first leave behind certain reassuring expressions that have settled into language. The digitalization of children and the digitization of children are not the same thing. The former can be narrated as the spread of technology in the course of history. The latter is the steering of children’s behavior, attention, emotion, and time through product design. The first appears neutral. The second is a regime of commercial and behavioral intervention. It was precisely here that the real transformation began to be noticed. The problem became not children’s looking at screens, but the reshaping of childhood according to screen logic.

Today, the idea of removing children from the digital world cannot be treated as a simple call for prohibition. It is part of a broader process of reassessment. The question is no longer whether children should use the internet. The question is which areas of childhood should remain closed to the internet, which thresholds should be protected at which ages, which technological features cannot be considered legitimate for children, and which gaps in the child’s life should remain untouched. Because childhood is the time not of constant stimulation, but of intervals, waiting, boredom, occupying oneself, face-to-face play, accumulating attention, and slowly taking shape. The digital environment, by contrast, tries to leave no intervals.

For this reason, what is happening today is not the severing of children from technology, but the redrawing of a boundary between childhood and aggressive digital architecture. What was once presented as a sign of modernity is now increasingly seen in more and more places as a sign of unprotectedness. Once, it was expected that children would adapt to the digital world. Now, it is being understood that the way the digital world approaches childhood must be limited. The rupture begins precisely here.

When Did the Problem Become Visible?

Children’s being surrounded by the digital environment did not happen in a day. At first, everything looked more harmless. The internet was first presented as a means of access to information. Then it became a field that facilitated communication. After that, social media was marketed to children and young people as a field for self-expression, making connections, and becoming visible. Meanwhile, smartphones became smaller, cheaper, faster, and more personalized. Tablets entered schoolbags. The language of education became increasingly surrounded by the idea of digitalization. Families began to regard early familiarity with digital tools as necessary for preparing children for the future. During this process, very few people asked the following fundamental question: is the digital environment into which children are born really built according to their developmental needs, or is it opened onto a market that generates income from their attention, time, and reactions?

At first, contact with the screen was more fragmented. The computer would be turned on at certain hours, the game console would remain tied to a particular room, and internet use would take place in a relatively more visible way. Then the device descended into the child’s pocket. This physical change did something far beyond its cultural effect. The digital world was no longer a separate zone standing in a particular corner of the house. It turned into an environment carried along with the child, capable of entering every gap in the child’s life, calling the child back at every hour of the day, and able to come into play on the way to school, during recess, in bed, while visiting others, and during the few minutes the child is alone. After this point, the problem was not merely that device use had increased. The problem was that the temporal structure of childhood was being rewritten in favor of the device.

For a long time, this change was narrated as progress. Familiarity with technology at an early age was equated with preparing for the world of the future. The difference between digital skill and unlimited digital exposure was blurred. A child’s acquiring computer literacy and a child’s being opened to the short-video stream, the economy of constant notifications, the competition for visibility, and algorithmic recommendation were presented as if they were the same process. But these had been different things from the beginning. One is tool use; the other is being drawn into a behavior-shaping environment.

The problem began to become visible as this difference became increasingly impossible to keep open. At first, children’s looking at screens was seen as an ordinary habit. But over time, the following details began to accumulate: the child looks at the phone as soon as they wake up in the morning, has difficulty putting it down at night, returns to the ready-made feed instead of making up their own game when bored, the screen enters into play when there is silence during a meeting with friends, attention in class fragments within a few minutes, long texts become unbearable, and moments of emptiness become almost intolerable. Looked at one by one, these may appear to be small behavioral changes. Taken together, however, they indicate a deeper change in the rhythm of childhood.

For this reason, the issue became visible not through one large singular event, but through the addition of small deteriorations to one another. Sleep receded, reading became harder, patience declined, face-to-face play weakened, waiting moments disappeared, boredom was eliminated, and attention became more fragile. Even if a child was physically in the same room, mentally they began to be elsewhere all the time. This appeared in the daily observation of families, teachers, and eventually states as a concrete change. Children were growing up in an environment that was more restless, more scattered, more quickly bored, and more easily called back.

The transformation of platform design was also decisive in the clarification of the problem. In the internet of the earlier period, search, browsing, and access for particular purposes were more pronounced. In the later period, platforms began to function not according to what the user was looking for, but according to what would keep them inside longer. For children, this was a qualitative leap. Because now the child was not merely reaching a piece of content on the internet; they were entering an infinite and personalized flow. They were no longer determining for themselves when they would leave; they were being kept in an environment designed to make leaving difficult. Short videos, autoplay, the feed renewed with each swipe, visibility rewards, and the notification system that keeps the urge to return alive transformed the experience of use from access to information into a mechanism of behavioral attachment.

To grasp the importance of this transition, one must keep clear the distinction between the digitalization of children and the digitization of children. The digitalization of children means that they are born into a new technical environment. The digitization of children, by contrast, means that their attention, relationships, affects, and time are turned into measurable, traceable, and steerable data. The first expression describes a historical situation. The second expression describes the active opening of childhood to the market. This too was what remained invisible for a long time.

Meanwhile, schools too often accelerated this process rather than slowing it down. The screen was almost identified with modern education. Distributing tablets, switching to digital platforms, moving lesson materials into apps, and counting online access as an indicator of progress became ordinary. In this way, an environment already capable of fragmenting children’s attention and time was also legitimized in the sphere of education. The problem was not only that children used phones outside school; it was that schools too often embraced the screen rather than questioning it. The idea that children’s relationship with the digital world was inevitable became so powerful that the idea of drawing boundaries came to be perceived almost as backwardness.

Yet as all this terrain of acceptance collided with real life, it began to wear away. The more the amount of digital environment to which children were exposed at earlier ages increased, the harder its everyday consequences became to deny. This is why it is important that the OECD’s report explicitly treats the digital environment as not merely an opportunity for children, but also an area of risk and problematic use (🔗). Even if such reports are not decisive on their own, they placed scattered observations into a common framework: the issue was not the personal anxiety of a few parents, but a widespread environmental transformation affecting the basic conditions of childhood.

Over time, the visible scene also changed. Children gathered together during recess but eyes not looking at one another, minutes silently swiped away in the same room, moments at the family table when the phone is returned to at short intervals, screen time stretched out in bed at night, attention scattered after a few pages in front of a book, anxiety about remaining visible even within friendship, the habit of shutting oneself inside with a screen instead of going outside. Each of these may look small on its own. But looked at together, the problem becomes much clearer: childhood has been torn away from its own developmental rhythm and attached to another rhythm.

For this reason, once the problem became visible, it began to turn into not only a pedagogical but also a political and legal issue. Because what emerged was not a simple habit. An environment targeting children’s still-developing structure of attention, emotional threshold, and social position could not be limited spontaneously. The idea of protecting children moved ahead of the language of adapting to technology. The reason the problem was noticed late is that the digital environment initially appeared like a helpful tool; the reason it became visible is that it increasingly turned into the main environment shaping childhood itself.

Why Was It Noticed So Late?

There are several reasons why it took so long to understand that children were growing up under digital siege, and none of them is simple. One of the most important reasons was that the harm was not of the kind that explodes all at once. People often notice great dangers through sudden crises. Yet the harm the digital environment inflicted on children worked in the form of a slowly advancing erosion. The child did not lose their sleep entirely in one day, did not completely lose their attention, did not suddenly break away from friendship. Instead, day by day, they slept a little later, grew bored a little faster, swiped a little longer, focused for a little less time, and felt the pressure of visibility a little more. When harms of this kind are dispersed into everyday life, people are more inclined to take them for a new normal.

Another reason was that the digital environment presented itself in the language of benefit, convenience, and progress. Platforms, applications, and devices were marketed as tools that did not narrow children’s world but expanded it. It was said that communication was becoming easier, access to information was increasing, the space for creative expression was expanding, learning was being supported, and children were being prepared for the requirements of the age. This narrative concealed the actual functioning of digital systems. Because the revenue model depended largely on keeping the user inside as long as possible, calling them back, capturing their attention over and over again, measuring their behavior, and generating commercial value from that behavior. From the standpoint of this model, the child was not merely a user, but an extremely productive source of attention.

The critical illusion here was the disappearance of the difference between tool and environment. A child’s using a screen to reach a certain piece of information and carrying their entire free time, friendship relations, emotional tension, and need for visibility into platforms are not the same thing. Yet for a long time, these were thrown into the same sack in public discourse. What was called digital skill was confused with digital exposure itself. In this way, children’s spending more time in front of devices was interpreted as though it meant that they were more prepared and more developed.

Another reason for the delay was adults’ desire for relief. The device became a regulator not only for the child, but also for the adult. It functioned as a tool that distracted, quieted, delayed, diverted attention, postponed conflict, and kept occupied. It provided short-term relief for the exhausted parent. It kept the child calm in crowded public spaces. It reduced restlessness at the dinner table. It provided something to occupy the child on long journeys. In this way, the screen often settled in not as a child-protection problem but as a temporary solution that made daily life easier. Short-term relief concealed long-term harm.

The role of the school system cannot be underestimated either. Many educational institutions, rather than maintaining a distance from the screen, embraced it as if it were the natural extension of modernization. The discourse of digital classroom, digital homework, digital content, and digital access linked educational technology to educational quality. Within this approach, the conditions under which the screen could harm learning were not discussed sufficiently. When devices already causing children’s attention to be scattered at home and in the social environment were also legitimized within school, drawing boundaries became even more difficult. The line between technology use and technology dependence became blurred.

One reason for the delay was also that concern about digital harm could easily be suppressed through the accusation of moral panic. Every harsh criticism of the relationship between children and media was often presented as older generations’ not understanding what was new, fearing the young, or resisting change. In this way, serious observations were neutralized under the label of cultural conservatism. Yet the real issue was never opposing everything new. The issue was the exposure of children in developmental years to dependency-producing and behavior-steering systems that even adults struggle to cope with. To object to this is not fear of innovation; it is a reflex of protection.

The problem of measurement was also effective in this delay. It was relatively easy to measure how long children looked at a screen, but it was harder to measure how the screen transformed their sense of time, social relations, quality of sleep, capacity for deep reading, tolerance for boredom, and anxiety about visibility. For this reason, the debate was stuck for a long time in simple numbers. The question of how many hours of screen time per day was asked, but the function of the screen in the child’s life was not asked sufficiently. Yet two hours of screen time per day and two hours per day of short-video flow, like pressure, and algorithmic recommendation do not produce the same effect. Form is as decisive as duration. This distinction was noticed late.

The real benefits offered by the digital environment also played a part in the problem’s being understood late. Children really were able to communicate, really were able to access information, and really did find channels through which to express themselves. In some situations they did not feel alone, in some areas they acquired new skills, and some relationships were established online. Even if these real benefits did not render the structural harm of the environment invisible, they made it more debatable. Because the digital system did not appear as an entirely bad object. On the contrary, benefit and harm were interwoven within the same structure. This kept the public uncertain for a longer time. People were slower to approach with suspicion something whose functionality was obviously apparent.

Another reason was that what children were exposed to was architecture rather than content. For a long time, people looked for danger in bad content. Violence, sexuality, inappropriate language, strangers, fraud, explicit abuse, and similar headings were of course important. But what was actually wearing children down was often not the content, but the flow itself. Infinite scrolling, autoplay, the personalized recommendation system, like and view metrics, the pressure to remain visible, the logic of immediate reward, and the notification economy; all of these were transforming not merely children’s exposure to certain content, but their mode of attention and emotional threshold. People were used to the danger of content, but they saw later that architecture itself could be the danger. Behind this delay there was also an illusion between generations. Because children were growing up in the digital environment, it was assumed as though they would naturally adapt to this environment. Yet the fact that a child is born early into an environment does not mean that the environment is suitable for them. A child’s moving quickly in front of a screen, using menus well, switching easily between applications, or learning the logic of social platforms at a very early age does not show that the system is not harming them. On the contrary, sometimes the harm is hidden precisely inside this visible habit. The child appears to have adapted, but this adaptation often takes place at the cost of giving up their own developmental needs.

When all these things were combined, the digital environment was perceived for a very long time as an inevitable historical condition. As if the only option were for children to get used to it. Yet that was never the real question. The real question was always to which technological environments children would be exposed, at what age, at what intensity, and with which protective thresholds. This question returned in a delayed form. And the hardening taking place today is the result of this delayed recognition. People are no longer looking only at whether children use screens or not; they are questioning what kind of world the screen establishes over childhood. Even if it came late, the real understanding formed here: the digital environment had become not the neutral area around children, but a dominant apparatus shaping them according to its own rhythm.

Where Exactly Does the Harm Accumulate?

In children’s relationship with the digital environment, the real harm does not gather at a single point. It appears scattered, but in fact it accumulates in several basic areas that feed one another. These harms cannot be measured only by the duration of looking at a screen; because the issue is not only how long the child remains online, but how this environment establishes an order over the child’s nervous system, structure of attention, daily rhythm, social relations, and perception of self. The place where many problems that appear separate are tied to one another is exactly here.

One of the most visible areas is sleep. The digital environment disrupts children’s sleep in several different ways. First, the device physically extending into the night. After the child lies down in bed, the screen does not shut off; use that begins with a few minutes can easily extend. Second, the way platforms produce emotional arousal. The short-video flow, social media interaction, messaging, anxiety about visibility, the feeling of missing something, and the unexpected stream of content delay the brain’s passage into rest. Third, screen light at night and the constant urge to check make it harder for sleep to deepen. For this reason, the issue is not just going to bed late; it is a more fragmented, shallower, less restorative nighttime order. A 2024 systematic review finding meaningful relationships between social media use, sleep, and mental health shows that the concern in this area is not made up of scattered intuitions alone (🔗). When a child does not sleep well, the next day’s attention, memory, emotional resilience, and learning capacity are also directly affected. For this reason, the disruption of sleep opens the door to other harms as well.

The second major area is attention. The digital environment does not merely offer children a large quantity of content; it habituates their attention to function in a particular order. It is an order that is short, fast, rewarding, constantly renewed, makes waiting unnecessary, and offers the possibility of switching to something else at any moment. For a child who becomes accustomed to such an order, long sentences, remaining with a single task for a long time, uninterrupted thinking, occupying oneself alone, and enduring mental activities that do not provide immediate reward become harder. This difficulty does not arise from the child’s lack of will, but from the structure of the environment to which they have become accustomed. The logic of infinite scrolling makes attention jump from one thing to another instead of deepening on one thing. The short-video stream makes every activity with a slower rhythm boring. The notification order makes it harder for the child to sustain their own attention by themselves; because attention is constantly pulled from outside and redirected again. Over time, the child may find it difficult to remain alone even inside their own mind.

When attention is worn down, learning too is naturally affected. The harm here is not merely that the phone is used during class. Something much deeper happens. Learning, by its very nature, requires patience, repetition, passing through stages that seem boring, noticing what one has not understood and returning to it, keeping the mind on a single track for a while, and building accumulation over time. The digital environment, by contrast, produces rapid transitions, sudden reward, impatience, constant stimulation, and uninterrupted novelty. For this reason, the child is distracted more quickly while reading, long texts become more difficult, sustaining a line of thought while writing becomes harder, recall grows more superficial, and the very effort of learning can turn into something difficult to endure. The real danger here is not that the child does not like learning, but that the child becomes alienated from the mental rhythm that learning requires.

The harm that accumulates in the field of psychic balance cannot be underestimated either. Social media environments in particular affect children not only through content, but through a regime of social comparison and visibility. Signals such as who looks better, who is watched more, who gets more likes, who is close to which group of friends, who is left out, and who attracts how much attention constantly strain children’s emotional threshold. The child does not merely relate to friends; at the same time, the child begins to live as someone being watched. This situation is far more unsettling at an age when the sense of identity has not yet settled. The child begins to experience themself not only through what they are, but through how they appear and how they are received. Constantly expecting a reaction, fearing remaining invisible, checking the feed in order not to miss something, comparing oneself with the curated images of others’ lives, produces an inner unrest.

This unrest also transforms social relations. The digital environment is often presented as a means of socialization, but at the same time it can weaken the supports of face-to-face socialization. Being in the same place and being together are not the same thing. Children may be in the same row, the same park, the same house, the same room, the same table; but if their attention is not gathered in a shared game or conversation, physical proximity alone does not produce sociality. The digital flow divides shared time into individual flows. Children who come together during recess but turn to the screen fill gaps with brief swipes instead of conversation. Face-to-face encounter at times turns into a shallow extension of the online rhythm. Denser social capacities such as setting up a game, sustaining it, carrying its rules together, overcoming boredom together, and building humor slowly can weaken.

The harm in the field of privacy, meanwhile, is often not taken seriously enough. Yet when the child enters the digital environment, the child does not become only a viewer; the child also turns into an entity that leaves data, is watched, categorized, and targeted. Numerous behavioral traces are collected, such as which video the child watches and for how long, what the child laughs at, when the child returns to the screen, at which image the child pauses, what the child reacts to, what the child likes, at which hours the child is active, and how easily the child gets bored. This goes beyond the classical meaning of privacy. The child does not merely share personal information; behavioral patterns too become measurable. Alongside this, there are also problems such as cyberbullying, inappropriate content, the recording and circulation of peer violence, the risk of sexual exploitation, and ad targeting. The issue here is not only what the child sees. The issue is what the child is transformed into: a steerable user who produces attention and leaves data behind.

Another harm accumulates in the field of body image and the sense of self. On visual platforms in particular, the child no longer looks at their own body directly, but through the filter of screen logic. Face, clothing, posture, gesture, popularity, view count, and the capacity to receive reactions affect the way the child experiences their own existence. This should not be understood only as beauty pressure or appearance obsession. It is something broader. The child may begin to experience themself not as a lived body, but as an evaluated image. This difference is quite heavy in the developmental years.

Perhaps the least visible but most fundamental harm is the collapse of the temporal texture of childhood. Childhood does not consist only of activities. The developmental weight of childhood is also hidden in its empty spaces. Being bored, waiting, gazing somewhere and drifting off, spontaneously inventing a game, dealing with funny but purposeless things, doodling in a notebook, going out into the street and figuring out on the spot what to do, enduring long silences, and turning boredom into something creative; each of these is an invisible but vital part of child development. The digital environment fills these gaps very quickly. Whenever the child encounters an inner void, the feed comes into play. Thus the threshold for boredom falls, the capacity to invent games by oneself weakens, and the inner rhythm becomes dependent on external stimulus. Childhood appears fuller, but in fact becomes impoverished from within.

Turkish discussions on how the culture of intense interaction and the logic of short videos transform the structures of attention, waiting, and perception may also help in understanding this terrain (🔗). What must really be grasped here is that the digital environment does not merely add new contents to children’s lives. That environment reorganizes the way children live their lives. It disrupts the sleep order, fragments attention, wears down the patience required for learning, binds psychic balance to the pressure of visibility, can flatten social relations, turns privacy into data flow, and eliminates the empty spaces of childhood. That is exactly why the harm is great. Because it accumulates not in a single area, but across many of the supporting tissues of childhood.

Why Did the Debate Suddenly Harden?

For a long time, the dominant approach regarding children’s relationship with the digital environment was advice for moderate use. Guides were prepared for families, it was said that attention should be paid to screen time, the importance of talking with children was emphasized, and digital balance was recommended. This entire body of advice was not worthless. But over time, the following became impossible to avoid seeing: leaving children inside platforms built upon attention exploitation and product design that steers behavior, and then handing over all responsibility to family discipline and the child’s self-control, was not realistic. If the problem was not only an individual usage habit, then the solution too could not be only individual awareness.

The reason the debate appears to have suddenly hardened is, in fact, not that it suddenly hardened, but that accumulated anxieties were finally translated into institutional and political language. Families had long been observing that children had difficulty putting devices down at night, that their attention was being scattered at school, that their friendships were becoming tied to the phone, and that their moods were becoming sensitive to the online flow of reactions. Teachers were encountering students who were present in class but mentally elsewhere. Discussions in the fields of health and education began to state more and more clearly that the screen issue was not merely a matter of habit, but a matter of developmental environment. In the end, states, schools, and regulatory institutions began to move toward accepting that it was insufficient to leave the position of the screen in children’s lives at the level of advice alone.

There was another reason behind this hardening: earlier mild solutions did not produce the desired result. It became harder for families to control children’s screen time one by one. Because devices became personalized, circles of friends shifted to digital platforms, and lessons and communication too began to flow through the phone. When a child was removed from one screen, they often felt as though they were being cut off from their entire social environment. The first and most widespread counterargument was the claim that the digital world is already inevitable. Yet today more and more people clearly see the following difference: living with technology is one thing, surrendering childhood to the algorithmic flow is another.

The second objection that seemed strong was the claim that children would fall behind. According to this view, delaying the screen or restricting access to social media meant leaving the child outside their era, depriving them of digital skills, and making them disadvantaged in the future. This objection too may appear reasonable at first glance. Yet here as well the difference between falling behind and being protected was blurred. A child does not need to open a social media account at the age of 11 in order to learn the logic of software, do research, access information, or use creative tools. A child does not need to be dragged at night through the short-video flow in order to acquire digital skills later on. What Might Come Next?

The tendency toward removing children from the digital world is not yet a completed process. It has, in fact, only just begun. The school phone bans, age-threshold debates, and platform restrictions aimed at children that are visible today are most likely the harbingers of a second phase that will be harsher and more systematic. Because most of the steps taken up to now have served not so much to solve the whole problem as to draw the first boundary. For children’s relationship with the digital environment truly to change, the steps that come next will have to be more technical, more legal, and more comprehensive.

The first clear tendency will be the hardening of age verification. For a long time, platforms applied age limits in an almost symbolic way. The user entered their date of birth by hand, and the system believed it. Such a model was not child protection, but institutional turning a blind eye. Now this field is changing. Conclusion

The call to remove children from the digital world may sound harsh at first glance. Because for a long period it was said that the earlier children entered the digital environment, the better. Early screen, early platform, early connection, early visibility, and early digital sociality were packaged almost like a promise of a prepared future. Once, the solution was individual awareness and advice on balance within the family. Now it is being understood that school, law, product design, and public norms must all enter into operation together. This transformation is not a small cultural oscillation; it is the renewed defense of the idea of childhood.

The most important thing here is not to reduce the matter to a simple dilemma of ‘ban or freedom’. Child protection can never be solved through an abstract principle of liberty. For children there are already age limits, safety measures, educational regimes, public boundaries, and developmental thresholds. The digital environment too can no longer be kept outside this general framework. Because what is at stake here is not only a form of entertainment, but the pressure that the economy of attention, time, data, desire, and visibility establishes over childhood. In the face of this pressure, asking for boundaries is not extremity, but a belated minimum measure.

In the end, a very plain reality remains. Removing children from the digital world is not shutting them into darkness. It is protecting them from an exposure that is still too early. It is reclaiming childhood, to some degree, from notification, measurement, data extraction, infinite scroll, the pressure of social comparison, and constant stimulation. Australia’s influence did not remain within its own borders alone. According to Reuters’s broad roundup dated 6 March 2026, the Australian model became a reference point for many governments in Europe and Asia. The fact that even the Pinterest CEO, in the same days, called for a global social media ban for those under 16 shows that the debate on child online safety is no longer only the issue of activists or a few politicians. Ireland is not yet at the stage of a definitive ban, but it is following a striking line in the direction of building the age-verification infrastructure through the state. According to RTÉ’s report of 15 March 2026, the government’s digital wallet draft is being presented as ‘the next step’ in the infrastructure required for social media age verification. This shows that Ireland, before directly declaring a ban, has chosen to build a state-supported verification tool. As Reuters reports it, this system will enter into force at the end of March and will envisage the deactivation of under-16 accounts on high-risk platforms. This shows that a new risk distinction is being made among social media or video platforms, and that not only classic social networks but also video-sharing platforms are being included in the debate over children’s access (🔗) (🔗).

Malaysia too had announced in November 2025 that it planned a social media ban for those under 16 from 2026 onward. According to Reuters reports, the government asked major platforms, especially TikTok, to strengthen their age-verification mechanisms, and put into force a broader regulation package introducing a licensing obligation for platforms with more than 8 million users. This means that the social media age threshold is advancing not on its own, but together with a regime of licensing and platform oversight (🔗) (🔗).

In the United States, the picture is more fragmented and more legally conflictual. At the federal level, the basic framework is still COPPA; that is, parental consent is required for the online collection of personal data from children under 13. But because this federal threshold did not harden the social media age limit sufficiently from the standpoint of child protection, more aggressive moves have come in recent years at the state level. According to Reuters’s report of 10 March 2026, states such as Florida and Georgia turned toward harsher restrictions on social media platforms carrying addiction-producing features; states such as Utah and Louisiana too followed similar lines. In Europe, the child-safety debate is not limited only to social media age and phone bans; the crisis is also growing around the detection of child sexual abuse material and platform obligations. According to Reuters’s report of 16 March 2026, the EU failed to agree on extending temporary rules allowing platforms voluntarily to detect and remove child-abuse content; these rules had been expected to expire on 3 April 2026. This shows another fracture in the field of child safety: on the one hand platforms are expected to protect children, on the other hand, because of tensions involving privacy and end-to-end encryption, it is becoming difficult to establish a common framework (🔗).

For this reason, reading the current picture only as ‘bans are multiplying’ would be incomplete. In essence, three new tendencies are becoming visible. First, states want technically to verify that child accounts are really child accounts. Second, even where access is granted, the idea of turning off design features that increase dependency for children is growing. Third, public norms are emerging that cleanse children’s shared time of devices not only in school and the home, but outside them as well. When these three come together, the project of removing children from the digital world turns no longer into a simple culture war, but into a large field of re-regulation bringing together age verification, product architecture, school order, data law, and platform responsibility (🔗).

The intellectual rupture behind these developments is also clear: it is being more openly accepted that what harms children is not only content, but architecture. Infinite scroll, autoplay, personalized recommendation, the notification economy, and visibility metrics are no longer seen as innocent elements of user experience. Some countries separate children from phones during school hours, some tie and delay social media accounts through age thresholds, some descend into product design, some build a state-supported age-verification wallet, and some try to pressure platforms through the courts.
