When cinema is approached psychoanalytically, it is treated as though it must first and foremost be read as a symptom. Taking contemporary industrial cinema as a symptom carries the risk of denying the apparatus’s logic of production and conflating it with the neurotic formation of the subject. Cinema is not the expression of a symptom but the prior production of a symptomatic position.

For this reason, cinema must be conceived not as the spontaneous manifestation of the unconscious, but as an apparatus that intervenes in the organization of the unconscious into particular forms.

  1. Master discourse: The production of “what ought to be”

What is decisive in Lacan’s Master discourse is that a signifier (S1) organizes the field of knowledge (S2), and that the divided subject ($) emerges as a result of this operation. The critical point here is not that the Master personally explains everything. On the contrary, the Master posits the initial signifier that determines what will count as explainable, meaningful, and valid.

In this sense, cinema is not directly the Master discourse itself; yet it can function as an extraordinarily effective S1 → S2 production machine through which the Master discourse can operate at the cultural level.

For example, when a particular social norm, identity, way of life, or form of desire is posited as an S1, cinematic narrative produces around it an enormous field of justification composed of S2s:

S1 → narrative → character → cause → effect → emotion → identification.

Thus, the naked command “you should be like this” does not appear as a naked command.

Instead:

“Look, let me show you why it should be this way.”

is said.

Here cinema functions as an apparatus that, while veiling the Master’s command, furnishes it with a world and a causality.

The Master discourse issues the command; cinema dramatizes why the command is reasonable, natural, inevitable, or desirable.

  1. Superego: From “You must” to “You must want this”

It is insufficient to conceive the classical form of the superego merely as a prohibitive authority. From a Lacanian perspective, the paradox of the Superego is that while laying down the law, it simultaneously demands jouissance.

Thus, from the standpoint of the contemporary cultural apparatus, the Superego does not merely say: “Do this.”

It produces a further command;

“You must want this.”

Even:

“You must experience this as your own desire.”

It is here that the genuinely manipulative force of cinema emerges.

Because when a norm is imposed on the subject from the outside, the subject can recognize that it is an external command. But when the same norm is presented as a character’s desire, trauma, love, struggle, or “liberation,” the boundary between command and desire becomes blurred.

The Superego no longer merely tells the subject what to do; it also shapes what the subject ought to desire.

For this reason, the more advanced form of the cinematic ideological operation is:

«The command must be experienced not as a command, but as desire.»

  1. The “counterfeit symptom” emerges precisely here

At this point, the concept of the “counterfeit symptom” enters analytically into play.

The classical symptom is a necessary and involuntary formation of the subject’s unconscious conflict. The subject does not simply choose the symptom. The symptom returns as a formation that remains opaque even to the subject.

What the cinematic apparatus produces, by contrast, is a representation or simulation of the symptom.

The film presents the subject with a structure like this:

“You actually have a problem like this too.”

Then it gives this problem:

  • a cause,
  • an emotion,
  • an enemy,
  • an object of desire,
  • a solution,
  • an identity,
  • a moral outcome

.

The subject thus adopts a prepackaged conflict as their own psychic reality.

The “counterfeit” character here does not mean that it is ineffective or inadequate. On the contrary, once a simulated symptom is internalized, it can produce real psychic and social effects.

Thus, the issue is not an opposition between the false and the real.

The issue is the difference between discovering the symptom and producing the symptomatic position.

  1. Why is this not hysteria?

For this reason, classifying cinema as hysterical discourse is also problematic.

In hysterical discourse, what is decisive is the subject’s dividedness and the question addressed to the Master: “What do you want from me?” The hysterical subject exposes the gap in the Master’s knowledge; demands an answer from the Master and, at the same time, reveals the Master’s inadequacy.

The cinematic operation here moves in the opposite direction.

Rather than producing a question, it produces the format of an answer.

The subject is told: “This is your problem. This is its cause. This is the correct emotion associated with it. This is the correct way to position yourself. This is where you must ultimately arrive.”

Thus, what is at stake here is not the neurotic subject interrogating the Master, but the insertion of the subject into a particular pre-prepared chain of signification.

For this reason, rather than “hysteria,” the concepts of normative unconscious production or Superego operation would be more accurate.

  1. How should the “collective unconscious” be understood here?

There is no need here to speak of an archetypal unconscious shared by everyone in the Jungian sense.

A more radical claim can be advanced:

The collective unconscious can, in part, be culturally produced.

The constant circulation of the same narrative patterns, character types, desires, fears, and models of resolution creates a ready-made psychic lexicon through which the individual subject will later recognize their own desires and conflicts.

Cinema here is not a mirror of the unconscious.

On a large scale, it produces the repertoire of images and signifiers through which the unconscious can constitute itself.

This does not mean that “cinema completely creates the unconscious.” Such a claim would be too strong. A more precise formulation is:

Cinema produces, on an industrial scale, ready-made signifying and imaginary material onto which the subject’s unconscious formations can be articulated.

  1. Why is a multimillion-dollar industry theoretically important?

Here the economy is not a secondary matter.

If we read cinema merely as the unconscious expression of an individual artist, we leave economic organization out of the picture. Yet in industrial cinema, production, distribution, marketing, investment, audience research, platform economics, and political-cultural interests are not wholly independent of one another.

For this reason, the only question to be asked is not:

“Why did the director do this?”

The more important question is:

“What is the apparatus that makes this kind of narrative producible and circulable on a mass scale?”

In this way, psychoanalytic analysis is expanded from individual psychology toward the economy of cultural production.

For the system to function, everyone does not need to participate consciously in the same secret plan. Market incentives, genre conventions, censorship and regulations, audience expectations, investment logic, political conditions, and institutional norms can reinforce one another and produce conspiracy-like outcomes.

Thus, the concept of a “planned project” is used not in the sense of a centrally coordinated secret plan, but in the sense of an institutionally organized and reproducible logic of production.

  1. Why might cinema not need to be “analyzed” anew every time?

Here the most interesting consequence of the theory emerges.

If cinema were genuinely a symptom, each individual film could present us with a specific unconscious knot. But if cinema is approached primarily as a production apparatus, the differences between individual films can become secondary.

The same operation is repeated across different genres:

Form A: produces the norm through love.

Form B: produces the norm through fear.

Form C: produces the norm through heroism.

Form D: produces the norm through liberation.

The colors change; but the structural operation does not.

For this reason, the object of analysis is not the “film” but the recurring logic of production across films.

Critique thereby ceases to be an endless hermeneutic activity. Instead of repeatedly asking, for every new film, “What is this a symptom of?”

it is enough to ask

“Through what content is the same Superego operation being repeated this time?”

  1. The problem of jouissance

Here there is an extremely important Lacanian knot: the Superego does not merely impose prohibitions; it demands jouissance.

Cinema can realize this demand with particular force, because it does not merely narrate the normative message; it provides the message with an emotional and sensory investment.

The subject does not merely say:

“I should live like this.”

The subject is simultaneously brought to the point of saying:

“Living like this should satisfy me.”

Thus, norm and jouissance are bound together.

This is precisely the more developed form of the Superego:

“You must do this and you must enjoy it.”

For this reason, cinematic ideology is more complex than a mere propaganda model. Propaganda gives the subject a message; the cinematic apparatus can bind the message to the economy of desire.

  1. Conclusion: Cinema is not a symptom, but an apparatus capable of producing symptoms

From this perspective, cinema should be reduced neither simply to “ideological propaganda” nor to a “mirror of society’s unconscious.”

The sharper thesis can be formulated as follows:

Cinema is a Superego apparatus that, rather than directly determining the subject’s desires, fears, and normative positions in the modern cultural field, produces on an industrial scale the signifying and imaginary field within which they can operate.

Whether cinema expresses the symptom thus becomes secondary.

Rather than representing the symptom, cinema contributes to the production of a symptomatic subject position.

For this reason, the unit of analysis of cinema should not be the individual film, but the recurring operation.

And this operation can roughly be written as follows:

S1 / Master signifier

↓

S2 / knowledge, narrative, and justification

↓

$ / identification of the divided subject

↓

a / object of desire and jouissance

Here cinema is not a structure that single-handedly “represents” all four of these terms. Rather, it functions as one of the cultural interfaces that bind them together.

Ultimately, the issue moves beyond the question “What is the film saying?”:

«Which S1 does it put into circulation? Through which S2 chain does it justify it? Into which position is the subject called? Through which a is jouissance promised? And at the end of all this, which command of “you ought to be” is constituted as though it were the subject’s own desire?»

Once these questions are asked, it becomes clear that cinema is not the symptom itself; it is one of the cultural-technical apparatuses of the Superego capable of producing symptomatic effects.

Es erzeugt einen weitergehenden Befehl;

„Du sollst dies wollen.“

Sogar:

S1 / Herrensignifikant

↓

S2 / Wissen, Erzählung und Rechtfertigung

↓

$ / Identifizierung des gespaltenen Subjekts

↓
