Processing the symptom nine times

The Freudian-Lacanian symptom is an overdetermined formation in which signifiers, bodily traces, repetitions, contingent encounters, and enjoyment are knotted together in the subject’s history. The ceaseless return of a phrase, a particular bodily response, the repetition of the same relational form, the reconstruction of the same failure, and the return of a particular scene years later in new guises constitute different faces of this knot. The symptom is thus a formation that carries the past into the present moment, binds the body to speech, and says more than the subject’s own explanation can say. Lacan’s valeur de vérité [truth value] for the symptom names precisely this point: the value of the symptom derives from the reconstruction in speech of the singular knot it carries. The transmission of Seminar XIX published in Žižekian Analysis directly connects this axis of valeur de vérité to the concept of the symptom.

The nine deviations subject this knot to nine distinct operations. The Mysticist deviation ambiguates and piles meanings onto the symptom. The Eventist deviation discontinuizes and shifts the weight of the symptom from the historical chain to the moment of rupture. The Dadaist deviation stages and brings the symptom out into a visible public scene. The Culturalist deviation gives form and turns the symptom into the cultural signature of the age. The Hegemonist deviation articulates and strings heterogeneous symptoms together into a common chain. The Performativist deviation reiterates and turns the repeated act into identity over time. The Communicationist deviation functionalizes and processes the symptom as a malfunction within the communicative order. The Networkist deviation relationalizes and distributes the symptom along circuits of circulation. The Signalist deviation digitizes and processes the symptom as discrete states, measurable differences, and feedback values.

Each deviation amplifies a property that the symptom genuinely carries. The symptom produces meaning; it bears ruptures within the flow of life; it takes visible form under the gaze; it draws on the cultural material of its age; it can converge with other disturbances; it repeats; it operates within speech; it circulates across persons, institutions, and objects; it can be recorded as discrete signs. The common movement of the nine deviations consists in granting one of these properties authority over the symptom’s entire organization. Step by step, this movement renders the symptom interpretable, classifiable, stageable, organizable, repeatable, circulable, and measurable.

The same generational rhythm operates across the nine lineages. The first generation discovers a particular operation; the second generation reconstructs the same operation within a broader material; the third generation elevates the operation into a general cultural, political, ontological, or technical principle. In Jung, archetypalized meaning expands into narrative in Campbell and into cosmic play in Watts. In Althusser, the contingency of the encounter expands into the event in Badiou and into absolute contingency in Meillassoux. In Charcot, the exhibition of the clinical body expands into the exhibition of the staging apparatus in Brecht and into the spectacularization of social relations in Debord. In Benjamin, the historical form of perception expands into the culture industry in Adorno and Horkheimer and into the cultural logic of the entire period in Jameson. In Sorel, mythical condensation expands into hegemonic collective will in Gramsci and into the chain of equivalence in Laclau. In Austin, the speech act expands into iterability in Derrida and into the performative constitution of identity in Butler. In Saussure, systemic value expands into the functions of communication in Jakobson and into social coordination in Habermas. In Tarde, currents of imitation expand into the recursive production of communication in Luhmann and into a heterogeneous network of associations in Latour. In Turing, discrete operation expands into quantitative information in Shannon and into feedback control in Wiener.

Capitalist discourse provides the common field of circulation for these nine operations. The previously established coordinates of Freudo-Marxism, deviation, and capitalist discourse form the historical background (🔗) (🔗) (🔗) (🔗). In the circuit $ → S₁ → S₂ → a → $, the impasse of the divided subject calls for a naming; S₁ names this impasse; S₂ turns the name into an apparatus of knowledge, technique, and processing; objet a produces a new object of attraction; this object produces desire and impasse once again. Each of the nine deviations contributes a different material to this circuit: interpretation, novelty, visibility, style, collective bond, identity, function, connection, and data.

The analytic cut operates at the very center of these nine modes of production. The same question passing through meaning, event, stage, epochal form, collective chain, identity, communicative function, network, and signal singularizes the symptom again: once all these operations have taken place, which element returns to the same place? The singular cause of the symptom appears precisely here. While the nine deviations extract a processable product from the symptom, the analytic cut connects the remainder that reappears within this product back to the cause of the symptom.

The Mysticist deviation: ambiguation

The Mysticist deviation piles layers of meaning onto the symptom. A sign may begin as the mark of a personal conflict and become the expression of an archetype, a myth, a universal narrative, and finally a cosmic order. Each expansion gives the symptom a new horizon of meaning; the symptom increasingly comes to be read as the herald of a larger whole. Jung, Campbell, and Watts amplify the same operation of ambiguation on three different scales: Jung archetypalizes psychic depth, Campbell narrativizes the archetype, and Watts cosmologizes the narrative.

The first movement in Jung is the transition from personal material to transpersonal form. His phrase « allgemeine seelische Grundlage überpersönlicher Natur » [a general psychic foundation of a transpersonal nature], used to describe the collective unconscious, clearly establishes this scale. The individual dream, fear, fantasy, and conflict begin to bear, alongside their own life history, the common psychic forms of humanity. Concepts such as Archetyp [archetype], Schatten [shadow], Anima, and Selbst [Self] open broader forms behind personal experience. Jung’s formula of individuation points in the same direction: « Individuation bedeutet: zum Einzelwesen werden … zum eigenen Selbst werden. » [Individuation means: becoming an individual being … becoming one’s own Self.]

Within this framework, the symptom operates as more than the return of a conflict from the past; it also becomes the herald of psychic content that the subject has yet to integrate. The same dream image can first be connected to a particular scene involving the mother, then to the Great Mother archetype, then to a form of death and rebirth. The specific detail within the symptom becomes the bearer of a broader psychic type. This is precisely the first stage of ambiguation: singular determination opens onto a collective density of meaning.

Campbell extends Jung’s archetypal verticality into narrative time. The formula “Dream is the personalized myth, myth the depersonalized dream.” establishes a difference of scale between dream and myth; the individual dream becomes the personal form of myth, while myth becomes the depersonalized form of dream structure. Campbell’s relationship to Jung is both conceptual and directly textual; Campbell worked on Jung, later edited The Portable Jung, and made archetypes one of the basic instruments of comparative myth analysis.

The Hero with a Thousand Faces binds this expansion to a temporal schema. Campbell establishes the core of the monomyth through the sequence “separation—initiation—return”. The symptom can thus be read through more than the question “What does this symbolize?”; it can also be read through the question of which stage of an entire journey it represents. Loss can assume the form of separation, crisis of the threshold, severe ordeal of initiation, temporary resolution of return, and acquired insight of the boon. Jung’s archetype acquires a plot in Campbell.

Watts carries this narrative into cosmic play in the third generation. In a 1960 talk, he directly refers to Campbell’s Masks of God and describes the central scene of Hindu cosmology as “one single divine actor who is playing all the parts”. The individual person thus becomes a role within the cosmic play, social personality becomes a mask, and conflict becomes one of the poles of the same play. Jung’s transpersonal psyche and Campbell’s universal narrative expand across existence as a whole in Watts.

Ambiguation continuously enlarges scale across these three generations. The personal complex opens onto archetypal form, the archetype onto the universal journey, and the universal journey onto cosmic dramaturgy. A female figure in the same dream can first represent a particular familial scene, then the Great Mother, then the guide figure of the journey, and then the cosmic play masking existence itself. The multiplication of meaning increasingly turns the symptom into the nodal point of a larger world.

The law of resistance of this deviation feeds on the remainders of interpretation. When one interpretation consumes the excess within the symptom, a higher interpretive layer enters; the archetype expands into myth, myth into cosmology. The production of excess meaning thus creates the condition for its own continuation. The hard point of the symptom becomes fuel for the process of interpretation.

Capitalist discourse turns meaning into an object of experience and transformation within this structure. The impasse in the form of $ is named through S₁s such as “finding oneself,” “shadow,” “awakening,” “transformation,” and “journey”; S₂ processes these names into techniques of guidance, repertoires of content, classifications, and practices; objet a carries the promise of integration and transformation. New experience generates a new sense of lack, and the circuit of meaning begins again.

The analytic cut selects the specific signifier from within the proliferation of meaning. Thousands of people can attach themselves to the same archetype; what matters for a particular subject is precisely which word, which bodily point, which old scene, and which repetition carries the archetypal form. The Mysticist deviation turns the unresolved point of the symptom into an entrance to greater meaning; the analytic cut treats the same point as the singular knot of signifier and enjoyment in the subject’s history.

The Eventist deviation: discontinuization

The Eventist deviation shifts the weight of the symptom from continuity to rupture. As the symptom’s long historical formation recedes, the unexpected encounter and the new beginning acquire determining force. Althusser, Badiou, and Meillassoux amplify the same operation of discontinuization on three scales: encounter, event, and absolute contingency.

In the late Althusser’s line of matérialisme de la rencontre [materialism of the encounter], the world is conceived less as a totality unfolding according to a necessary plan than as conjunctures in which encounters take hold. The formula « Chaque rencontre est aléatoire » [Every encounter is contingent] is the most condensed form of this line. In the same text, the status of necessity is reversed through the phrase « la soumission de la nécessité à la contingence » [the submission of necessity to contingency]. The elements that encounter one another undergo a prise, a taking hold and acquisition of form; the necessity that appears afterward is the continuity of this encounter that has taken hold.

Applied to the symptom, this movement produces a transition from a long chain of causes to the constitutive effect of a particular encounter. A sentence, a chance encounter, a political rupture, a loss, or a love event can suddenly hold together previously scattered elements within a different totality. In the first generation of the Eventist deviation, the decisive question shifts from “Which line of the past arrived here?” to “Which encounter took hold here?”

Badiou elevates this contingent encounter into the condition for the beginning of a truth. The event is the point that tears through the ordinary order of the existing situation; the formation of the subject proceeds within fidelity established toward this event. In Badiou’s own political and philosophical language, the expressions fidélité à l’événement [fidelity to the event] and fidélité à la rencontre [fidelity to the encounter] carry the long-term truth procedure that begins after the event. In the later phase of an intellectual relation that began with Badiou as Althusser’s student, conjunctural rupture acquires the status of an ontological and political event.

The expansion here is clear. In Althusser, the encounter shakes the necessary origin of the existing structure. In Badiou, the event initiates a new truth sequence beyond the knowledge of the existing situation. The event does not remain a momentary flash; fidelity repeatedly scans the situation in the light of the event. When the symptom is subjected to this operation, decisive weight shifts from how the old chain was formed to how the event repositions the subject.

Meillassoux enlarges contingency even further in the third generation. The formula « seule la contingence est nécessaire » [only contingency is necessary] carries contingency from a quality of historical events to the general modal principle of being. Contingence surchaotique [sur-chaotic contingency] describes the hyperchaotic field that makes possible the otherwise-being of laws and orders. Althusser’s encounter thus opens onto the event in Badiou, and Badiou’s event opens onto the absolute status of contingency in Meillassoux.

The same symptom can easily be seen through two different narratives. The first narrative follows the connections between a particular phrase heard in childhood, later repetitions in relationships, and bodily responses. The second foregrounds how a single encounter years later transforms all the coordinates of a life. The Eventist deviation amplifies the logic of the second narrative; the moment of rupture takes hold of the organizing weight of the past.

Its law of resistance follows from the same point. When a rupture produces the expected transformation, the expectation of a new event grows; new beginning, new paradigm, new period, new reset, and new leap reconstruct the same desire for discontinuity. Rupture itself becomes a repeated form.

Capitalist discourse readily binds the operation of discontinuization to the production of novelty. $ appears as the subject trapped in the existing order; S₁ gives names such as “innovation,” “transformation,” “new era,” and “reset”; S₂ produces new technologies, new organizations, new products, and new methods; objet a carries the promise of a transformation that will leave the old behind in a single stroke. Every new object rapidly produces a new old. Continuous innovation secures continuity of circulation in this way.

The analytic cut connects the contingent encounter to the problem of the trace. The question becomes why one particular encounter among thousands of contingencies was inscribed, why it produced a bodily response, why it activated a particular old signifier, and why it became the axis of repetition. The comparison around Badiou developed in Žižekian Analysis foregrounds this dimension of repetition by situating the death drive as negative mediation between Being and Event. The Eventist deviation shifts the weight of the symptom’s past toward rupture; the analytic cut binds the trace left by rupture to the history of repetition.

The Dadaist deviation: staging

The Dadaist deviation brings the symptom into the public scene, makes it visible, and exposes it. Here the term “Dadaist” names the operation of shock, estrangement, exposure, and visibility more than membership in a historical group. The clinical display of the patient’s body in Charcot, the estrangement of the apparatus of showing in Brecht, and the transformation of social relations into spectacle in Debord constitute three scales of the same staging operation.

The clinical arrangement Charcot established at the Salpêtrière is a powerful example of modern symptom staging. Hypnosis, the clinical amphitheater, students, typical stages, poses, and photography are parts of the conversion of the symptom into medical knowledge. Charcot describes the body under hypnosis as « une sorte de statue expressive » [a kind of expressive statue]; he also emphasizes that cataleptic poses are « éminemment favorable à la reproduction photographique » [eminently favorable to photographic reproduction].

These two phrases carry the entirety of the Charcotian operation. The body becomes an expressive statue; the pose is fixed; photography carries the same body to other gazes; typology connects the singular patient to a general clinical form. The truth of the symptom thus joins its capacity to be seen, repeated, and recognized. The detailed reading of the Charcot scene in Žižekian Analysis follows how the amphitheater and photography turn the symptom into clinical visibility and how the Freudian cut emerges from this point.

In the second generation, Brecht puts staging itself on stage. His definition of estranging representation is as follows: « Eine verfremdete Abbildung ist eine solche, die den Gegenstand zwar erkennen, ihn aber zugleich als fremd erscheinen lässt. » [An estranged representation is one that allows the object to be recognized while simultaneously making it appear strange.] The actor showing the role rather than fully dissolving into it, the visible artificiality of the set, and the way Gestus reveals the form of social relations make the stage itself staged for a second time.

Charcot shows the symptom; Brecht also shows the order of showing. In the first, the gaze captures the medical type. In the second, the gaze is arranged so that it can recognize its own habits. Lacan’s reference to Brecht in 1971 in the context of theatrical distance and techniques of cooling directly reveals the proximity of estrangement to the psychoanalytic problem.

Debord expands the stage from the theatrical structure to the whole of social relations in the third generation. His definition of the spectacle as « un rapport social entre des personnes, médiatisé par des images » [a social relation among people mediated by images] is decisive. The image here exceeds the status of content sitting on a surface; the way people relate to one another is organized through representation, visibility, and spectatorship. Commodity circulation, image circulation, and the position of the spectator converge on the same social plane.

The three generations thus expand from the patient’s body to society as a whole. In Charcot, the symptom is on stage. In Brecht, the apparatus of staging is on stage. In Debord, social relations operate within the logic of staging. When the same bodily event is passed through these three scales, it can first become a medical image, then a critique of the apparatus of representation, and then a social image entering circulation.

The law of resistance of the Dadaist deviation is the erosion of shock. As the image becomes familiar, pressure arises to produce a stronger image; as exposure becomes ordinary, more intensive exposure; as performance becomes familiar, sharper estrangement. The visibility of the symptom thus becomes the source of demand for new visibility.

The capitalist circuit turns attention into a material of circulation within this structure. $ appears as scandal, shame, body, conflict, or disturbance; S₁ gives it a striking name; S₂ activates techniques of image-making, editing, measurement, and distribution; objet a is the scene that holds the gaze. The gaze produces a new reaction, and the reaction produces a new scene. Visibility is converted into measurable reach and into demand for further visibility.

The analytic cut moves the symptom from visibility to the knot of speech. When the person behind the Charcotian image begins to speak, the meaning of the scene changes; a particular bodily movement becomes connected to a particular phrase, to transference, and to a series of repetitions. Lacan’s emphasis on dissolving the theater of hysteria is the explicit form of this cut. The Dadaist deviation turns the truth of the symptom into a force of visibility; the analytic cut returns the image captured by the gaze to the historical knot of speech.

The Culturalist deviation: formalization

The Culturalist deviation turns the symptom into the cultural signature of the age. It reads the form of the period upon singular behavior, affect, and style of perception. The historical form of perception in Benjamin, the standardization of the culture industry in Adorno and Horkheimer, and the entire cultural logic of a capitalist period in Jameson are three scales of the same formalizing operation.

Two words in Benjamin’s text on technical reproduction establish this line directly: Signatur [signature] and Symptom [symptom]. He describes the dissolution of aura as « Die Zertrümmerung der Aura ist die Signatur einer Wahrnehmung » [The shattering of aura is the signature of a mode of perception]. He also calls distracted reception « das Symptom von tiefgreifenden Veränderungen der Apperzeption » [the symptom of profound transformations in apperception]. Cultural form here bears the perceptual apparatus of an age upon itself.

Film, montage, technical reproduction, shock, and metropolitan rhythm make the historical character of perception visible. The operating mode of the human eye and attention changes together with cultural techniques. A strong connection can thus be established between the personal dimension of a behavior or style of attention and the perceptual organization of an age. Alongside the singular life history, the symptom becomes the sign of a historical regime of perception.

Adorno and Horkheimer elevate this movement to the system of cultural production. In Dialektik der Aufklärung, the formula « Kultur heute schlägt alles mit Ähnlichkeit. Film, Radio, Magazine machen ein System aus. » [Culture today stamps everything with similarity. Film, radio, and magazines form a system.] explains the common productive logic of cultural products. Whereas in Benjamin the technical environment alters the signature of perception, here the culture industry systematically produces, standardizes, and circulates forms as variations.

In this second generation, the symptom moves from being an example carrying the form of the age to an example carrying the rhythm of the system of cultural production. The rhythm of leisure operates in the same circuit as the rhythm of work, entertainment with consumption, novelty with standardization. A person’s incessant search for novelty, constant movement toward the next stimulus, or repetition of the same romantic patterns acquires a structure homologous to the cultural form of production of the age.

Jameson elevates this system to the cultural logic of a historical totality in the third generation. The phrase “the cultural logic of late capitalism” establishes postmodernism as a historical dominant broader than a single aesthetic movement. Pastiche, depthlessness, “waning of affect,” the transformation of the sense of history, and cognitive mapping become interconnected symptoms describing the cultural structure of the same period.

The scale is thus completed: in Benjamin, perceptual form is the signature of the age; in Adorno and Horkheimer, cultural production is a system; in Jameson, the entire order of culture is the logic of capitalism’s historical stage. The symptom can begin as the sign of an individual life and expand into the form of a “symptom of the age.”

The law of resistance of formalization is enlargement of scale. The singular case becomes connected to a generational diagnosis, the generation to a diagnosis of a period, the period to an economic-cultural stage. Mismatch creates pressure to produce a new and broader historical form. The singular detail thus becomes the material of a larger cultural schema.

The capitalist circuit turns historical diagnosis into style. $ appears as the subject seeking its place within the age; S₁ gives the name of a generation, aesthetic, lifestyle, or period; S₂ processes this name into codes, design repertoires, segments, and consumer categories; objet a carries the feeling of fully belonging to that period. Period diagnosis connects to aesthetic code, aesthetic code to identity, identity to product choice.

The analytic cut opens the differences among singularities within the same culture. Millions watch the same film, millions are enveloped by the same economic rhythm, and the same technological form regulates the attention of millions; the symptom of a particular subject selects a particular word, image, scene, and enjoyment from within this common form. The Culturalist deviation turns the symptom into the readable signature of the age; the analytic cut reopens the cause of singular selection within the age.

The Hegemonist deviation: articulation

The Hegemonist deviation strings heterogeneous symptoms together into a common chain. The principal operation here is the production of a shared antagonistic direction rather than the production of similarity. Sorel’s myth, Gramsci’s concepts of collective will and historical bloc, and Laclau’s articulation and chain of equivalence are increasingly explicit forms of the same operation.

Sorel’s myth of the general strike condenses various conflicts into images of the coming great confrontation. He says that social movements conceive their own actions « sous forme d’images de batailles » [in the form of images of battles] and emphasizes that myths must be approached as « les prendre en bloc comme des forces historiques » [taking them en bloc as historical forces]. A wage conflict, a dispute over working time, and factory discipline can thereby be conceived as different fronts of the same antagonistic world.

The Sorelian myth functions less as a program built to prove details one by one than as an image that condenses collective forces in the same direction. This is the first form of the Hegemonist deviation: symptoms stand side by side beneath a common image of conflict. What the beads strung on the thread have in common is the same direction of struggle.

Gramsci directly engages the Sorelian myth and reads Machiavelli’s Principe as « una esemplificazione storica del “mito” sorelliano » [a historical exemplification of the Sorelian “myth”]. He then shifts the focus toward organization. The Modern Prince becomes a constitutive center for « volontà collettive parziali che tendono a diventare universali e totali » [partial collective wills that tend to become universal and total]. Mythical condensation here becomes organized collective will.

Four different demands—wages, housing, education, and local administration—make this transition concrete. On the Sorelian level, all can be condensed within the same grand image of struggle. On the Gramscian level, these demands are connected through alliance, consent, organization, intellectual direction, and historical bloc. Articulation rises from affective condensation to political organization.

Laclau elevates articulation into the general logic of the formation of political identity in the third generation. Hegemony and Socialist Strategy defines articulation as “any practice establishing a relation among elements such that their identity is modified”. The relation thus does more than place already constituted elements side by side; the political identity of the elements entering the chain also changes.

When unmet demands become equivalent to one another along a common antagonistic frontier, a chain of equivalence is formed. A wage demand, housing demand, and education demand preserve their specific contents while becoming parts of the same frontier through their shared state of being unmet. As the chain expands, a particular signifier begins to represent a larger totality; the empty signifier and the constitution of “the people” emerge from this process.

Across the three generations, the nature of the thread changes. In Sorel, the thread is the mythical image of battle. In Gramsci, it is organized hegemonic will. In Laclau, it is the relation of equivalence through which demands transform one another. The symptom thus passes from a singular knot to a political link open to collective use.

The law of resistance produces new articulation from the breaking of the chain. When a demand struggles to carry the common name, another frame, another nodal point, or another master signifier enters. Hegemonic failure becomes the material for a more developed technique of articulation.

Capitalist discourse applies the same operation at the level of the market. Different desires can be connected around a single lifestyle, platform, consumer cluster, or brand promise. $ carries scattered demands; S₁ gives a common name; S₂ activates segmentation, data, design, and communication knowledge; objet a becomes the object of affective condensation of the chain. Heterogeneous desires are articulated into a common channel of circulation.

The analytic cut selects the singular difference of enjoyment remaining within equivalence. Two subjects can voice the same demand, attach themselves to the same slogan, and form part of the same collective subject; the fantasy carrying one person’s demand differs from the other’s. The Hegemonist deviation turns the symptom into an articulable link in the chain; the analytic cut restores the singular cause of enjoyment operating within the chain’s common name.

The Performativist deviation: reiteration

The Performativist deviation turns the repetition of the symptom into a mechanism of identity production. In Austin, speech produces action; in Derrida, the condition that allows action to function is the iterable sign; in Butler, reiterated acts produce effects of body and identity over time. Across three generations, the operation expands from speech to sign and from sign to identity.

Austin’s starting point is simple: “the issuing of the utterance is the performing of an action”. Under particular conditions, sentences such as “I promise,” “I name,” or the ceremonial “I do” simultaneously describe a situation and perform a social act. The concepts of performative, felicity, and illocutionary force make visible what language does in the world.

The first shift concerning the symptom begins here. The work a sentence performs within a relation becomes as important as the latent meaning it carries. While the statement “That’s just how I am” gives information about the person, it can also establish an expectation in the surrounding environment, close a discussion, determine the limits of the next action, and reproduce the person’s social position.

Derrida carries Austin’s performative into the general structure of iterability. “My communication must be repeatable—iterable” summarizes this move. A sign functions because it can be recognized in another context; a signature bears a recognizable form both when its owner is present and elsewhere; citation carries the trace of the previous context into a new one. Repetition carries the same form and changes the context at the same time.

The performative thereby expands from a particular type of utterance into a structural property of all signs. Every act cites prior forms, every citation creates a new context, and social recognizability emerges through repetition. From this perspective, symptomatic repetition can be read as a signifying practice that sustains itself.

Butler carries iterability into the constitution of body and identity in the third generation. The formula that identity is “instituted … through a stylized repetition of acts” clearly establishes the role of repetition in materializing the social subject over time. As bodily movements, gestures, modes of speech, clothing, expectations, and recognition are repeated, an appearance of continuity is formed.

A cycle of repetition works in this way: a particular act produces the expectations of the surrounding environment; expectation facilitates the next act; the next act strengthens the judgment of identity; the judgment of identity selects the next behavior. “I act like this” condenses over time into “I am this kind of person.” The act feeds identity, and identity feeds the new act.

The law of resistance also emerges from within repetition. When performance becomes blocked, variation is produced; when recognition weakens, intensified repetition; when the old pattern hardens, counter-performance. Repetition draws new forms of repetition from its own limit.

The capitalist circuit converts this structure into behavioral data. A click, view, purchase, or share is a singular act; their repetitions produce a profile; the profile determines subsequent recommendations; recommendations encourage new acts. The circuit operates as act → data trace → profile → recommendation → new act. $ carries the subject scattered across a behavioral repertoire, S₁ the profile name, S₂ the system of prediction and recommendation, and objet a the personalized object of attraction.

The analytic cut moves through the judgment of identity toward the cause of repetition. It opens the question of why the same act is selected repeatedly, around which lost object repetition revolves, and which enjoyment it sustains. The comparison in Žižekian Analysis between analytic discourse and performative master discourse emphasizes the position of objet a as agent for precisely this reason. The Performativist deviation turns the sediment of repetition into identity; the analytic cut reactivates the cause around which repetition revolves.

The Communicationist deviation: functionalization

The Communicationist deviation turns the symptom into a malfunctioning function within the communicative order. In Saussure, the sign acquires relational value within the system; Jakobson divides the speech event into distinct functions; Habermas elevates communication oriented toward understanding into the basis of social coordination. Along this line, the verbal knot of the symptom can increasingly be read as a problem of function.

Saussure defines language as « La langue est un système de signes exprimant des idées » [Language is a system of signs expressing ideas]. The decisive word here is système [system]. The value of the sign is constituted through its relations with other signs. A word is less an atom standing on its own than a differential position within the language system. This approach makes visible the relational order operating behind singular speech.

The first transformation regarding the symptom consists in giving weight to the word’s position within the system alongside its particular life history. The value carried by the same word, its oppositions with neighboring words, and its position within the sentence become analyzable. Saussure establishes the structural ground of the Communicationist lineage: the element is grasped within the system that enables it to function.

Jakobson turns this system into an explicit architecture of communication. “Language must be investigated in all the variety of its functions.” summarizes his program. Context, addresser, message, addressee, contact, and code are distinguished in the speech event; referential, emotive, poetic, conative, phatic, and metalingual functions are connected to them.

This schema makes communicative malfunction extremely concrete. Within the same argument, the weakness of the common code, the break in contact, the ambiguity of the message, or the direction of its effect upon the addressee can be analyzed separately. Jakobson’s work on aphasia likewise reads linguistic disturbance through the dissolution of particular operations. Along this line, the symptom can be converted into the question: “Which function is malfunctioning?”

Habermas raises communicative function to the level of social coordination in the third generation. » [The actors seek an understanding concerning the action situation in order consensually to coordinate their action plans and thus their actions.] turns communication into the basic mechanism of common action. Verständigung [understanding], validity claims, and the lifeworld carry this scale.

The same relational argument expands differently across three generations. Saussure opens the systemic value of words. Jakobson differentiates the functions of message, code, and contact. Habermas centers the common definition of the situation and the coordination of action. Functionalization thereby extends from the value of the sign to the condition under which society can act together.

The law of resistance produces more intensive communication from communicative malfunction. Explanation produces new explanation, common code produces metacommunication, metacommunication produces procedure, procedure produces measurement and communication management. The limit of communication becomes the input for a new technique of communication.

Capitalist discourse converts communicative function into measurable performance. $ carries the demand to be understood and receive a response; S₁ names the problem; S₂ activates message design, engagement measurement, response rate, satisfaction, and conversion techniques; objet a carries the promise of complete response and complete contact. More messages produce more measurement, and more measurement produces more optimization.

Lacan’s concept of lalangue opens a cut directly through this functionality. Seminar XX states: “Lalangue serves quite other things than communication.” Sound, double meaning, childhood resonance, the bodily effect of the word, and its value of enjoyment operate on a scale different from communicative success. A person can speak clearly, the interlocutor can understand, and the same symptomatic relation can be reconstructed. The Communicationist deviation turns the symptom into a functioning or malfunctioning communicative function; the analytic cut works on the historical and enjoyment-bearing effect of speech that exceeds communication.

The Networkist deviation: relationalization

The Networkist deviation turns the symptom into a network of circulation. Here the basic question shifts from the content of the symptom to the trace of its connections: who it passes from and to, in which institution it changes form, which object enters the circuit, and which communication produces the next one become important. The current of imitation in Tarde, recursive communication in Luhmann, and heterogeneous association in Latour constitute three scales of the same relationalizing operation.

Tarde describes the social being as « l’être social, en tant que social, est imitateur par essence » [the social being, insofar as it is social, is an imitator by essence]. Imitation here expands from superficial copying into a general law of social circulation. Beliefs, desires, gestures, fashions, expressions, and inventions spread among persons; new variants become centers of new waves of imitation.

From this perspective, the symptom can become a contagious pattern. The spread of a particular gesture of anxiety in the same school, the multiplication of the same language of complaint in the same workplace, or the acquisition of prestige by a particular behavioral pattern can be traced through circulation. The singular person is a node in the current; they transform the forms they receive and pass them to other nodes.

Luhmann moves in the second generation from the circulation of persons to the self-production of communication. The formula « Nur die Kommunikation kann kommunizieren. » [Only communication can communicate.] establishes the social system as a recursive order in which communications connect to one another. A communication produces Anschluss [connection/continuation] for new communication; the system multiplies its own elements through these continuations.

An individual disturbance can become a trigger for new chains of communication within this system. The sentence “Employees are burning out” can generate reports, meetings, measurements, policies, news, expertise, and new institutional decisions. The symptom thus becomes, alongside personal experience, a node in the multiplication of communication within the system. In Tarde, the pattern spreads among persons; in Luhmann, communication produces its own subsequent communication.

Latour expands the field of connection in the third generation into a heterogeneous network in which human and nonhuman actors work together. He explicitly establishes his relation to Tarde and identifies Gabriel Tarde as a precursor for ANT. The principle “to follow the actors themselves” moves inquiry from ready-made social categories to the concrete trace of connections.

A symptom of insomnia can be followed through body, working hours, screen, message, medication, physician, diagnosis, report, workplace, transportation, application, and data within this network. Each mediator turns the symptom into a different form: bodily experience into complaint, complaint into diagnosis, diagnosis into document, document into institutional decision, and decision into new behavior. The Latourian network of relationalization connects actors while also changing their capacities.

The operations of the three generations therefore enlarge one another: Tarde foregrounds diffusion, Luhmann recursion, Latour heterogeneous translation. The symptom moves from a behavioral pattern passing through a person to a systemic chain of communication, and from there to a topology of circulation jointly constituted by people and objects.

The law of resistance turns an unexplained remainder into a demand for a new connection. The missing link expands toward a new mediator, the local network toward a broader network, one institution toward another institution, and human relations toward technical objects. The map of connections increasingly proliferates.

Capitalist discourse condenses the operation of relationalization into platform logic. $ seeks access or connection; S₁ divides the parties into categories such as user, producer, customer, and provider; S₂ activates knowledge of matching, ranking, logistics, and data; objet a is the access promised by the new connection. The circuit relation → traffic → data → matching → new relation is established in this way.

The analytic cut returns to the repetition that remains in the same place once all the connections have been mapped. Two people within the same network conditions can develop different symptoms; the same screen, work rhythm, and institution can bind to two different organizations of enjoyment. The Networkist deviation turns the symptom into a topology of circulation distributed across relations; the analytic cut follows the singular repetition that returns to the same point within the topology.

The Signalist deviation: digitization

The Signalist deviation turns the symptom into discrete states, measurable differences, and feedback decisions. Turing formalizes discrete operation, Shannon turns difference into quantitative information, and Wiener feeds the result back into the system to establish a control circuit. Across three generations, computation, communication, and behavioral regulation form a single operational line.

Turing’s 1936 formula is extremely clear: “According to my definition, a number is computable if its decimal can be written down by a machine.” The machine occupies a particular state, reads a particular symbol, writes a new symbol, moves, and passes into a new state. Complex computation is converted into a sequence of finite and discrete operations.

The first movement of the Signalist deviation is this discretization. Complex behavior can be divided into state transitions such as “the trigger arrived,” “the state changed,” “the response occurred,” and “the result occurred.” On this plane, the symptom approaches a processable state machine. Turing’s own work on computability simultaneously establishes the problem of formal limits, increasing the mathematical precision of this operation.

Shannon carries the measure of discrete alternatives into communication in the second generation. The decisive idea of his 1948 theory is that the actual message has been selected from a set of possible messages. The probability of selection, uncertainty, channel capacity, noise, and error become measurable. Turing’s symbolic state transition thus becomes quantitative information in Shannon.

When this operation is applied to the symptom, historical meaning and the calculation of transmission separate from one another. The resonance of a particular phrase within family history occupies one plane; the state in which the message appears, the channel through which it travels, and the error rate it produces occupy another. The Signalist deviation gives explanatory weight to the second plane: the excess of meaning is converted into operational differences.

Wiener connects the signal to a circuit regulating behavior in the third generation. The formula “feedback is a method of controlling a system by reinserting into it the results of its past performance” is the core of the cybernetic circuit. Target, actual output, difference, correction, and new measurement operate in the same closed loop.

This logic can easily be seen in a sleep system: the asleep/awake distinction is recorded; duration becomes a score; the score produces a recommendation; the recommendation changes behavior; new behavior produces a new score. The same structure can be applied to attention, movement, consumption, or work performance. Turing’s discrete state becomes Shannon’s measure, and Shannon’s measure becomes Wiener’s control signal.

Lacan’s interest in cybernetics shows the point of analytic cutting within this deviation from the inside. In Seminar II, cybernetic combinatorics, machine, and message become instruments for thinking the material operation of the symbolic order. A machine can process a sequence of symbols; the 0/1 distinction can establish a genuine combinatorial order. The symptom, meanwhile, knots the same combinatorics to body, repetition, and enjoyment.

The law of resistance produces new measurement from the remainder of measurement. An insufficient indicator produces a new sensor, low resolution a new variable, weak prediction a new model, and more frequent feedback. The symptom is increasingly converted into a more detailed data surface.

The capitalist circuit reaches its most technical form in this deviation. $ appears as uncertain behavior or disturbance; S₁ gives the name of a score, class, risk, or category; S₂ activates data processing, prediction, modeling, and intervention systems; objet a carries the promise of flawless prediction and personalized control. The circuit behavior → signal → model → intervention → behavior turns every action of the user into new training data.

The analytic cut separates codable difference from symptomatic truth value. The same sleep data can show the behavioral pattern in extreme detail; the symptom’s historical organization carries the connection between a particular night and a particular phrase, loss, relation, or fantasy. The Signalist deviation turns the historical excess of the symptom into discrete states and measurable differences; the analytic cut activates the position of the singular cause that reappears within the same measurement.

The single circuit of nine operations

The nine deviations place the same symptom into nine distinct lines of production. The operation of the Mysticist deviation is ambiguation: it extracts broader meaning from the symptom. The operation of the Eventist deviation is discontinuization: it condenses the symptom in the moment of rupture. The operation of the Dadaist deviation is staging: it converts the symptom into visibility. The operation of the Culturalist deviation is formalization: it turns the symptom into the signature of the age. The operation of the Hegemonist deviation is articulation: it binds symptoms within a common chain. The operation of the Performativist deviation is reiteration: it sediments repetition into identity. The operation of the Communicationist deviation is functionalization: it binds the symptom to a communicative function. The operation of the Networkist deviation is relationalization: it distributes the symptom across circuits of circulation. The operation of the Signalist deviation is digitization: it converts the symptom into measurable differences of state.

The materials produced by these nine operations likewise proceed in the same order: meaning, event, visibility, cultural form, collective chain, identity, function, connection, and data. These materials can be converted into one another. Meaning can become cultural style; style can be articulated to a common signifier; the common signifier can sediment into identity through repetition; identity can be inserted into a communicative function; communication can circulate through a network; circulation in the network can produce signal and data; data can trigger new events, new interpretations, and new forms of visibility.

Each deviation’s own law of resistance accelerates this common machine. In the Mysticist line, the remainder of interpretation produces a larger interpretation. In the Eventist line, realized rupture produces the expectation of a new rupture. In the Dadaist line, familiarized exposure generates a demand for more intensive exposure. In the Culturalist line, the detail overflowing the case is drawn into a broader diagnosis of the period. In the Hegemonist line, the broken link produces a new articulation. In the Performativist line, blocked repetition becomes a new form of performance. In the Communicationist line, communicative malfunction produces more intensive communication management. In the Networkist line, an unexplained remainder becomes a search for a new connection. In the Signalist line, the remainder of measurement calls for a new data channel.

Capitalist discourse converts these nine laws of resistance into the energy of circulation. Interpretation becomes commodified meaning, rupture novelty, stage attention, form style, articulation segment, repetition profile, function performance metric, network traffic, signal data. The circuit $ → S₁ → S₂ → a → $ sustains the same movement through nine distinct channels: name the impasse, pass the name into the apparatus of knowledge, produce a new object of attraction, extract a new impasse from the object of attraction.

The analytic cut does not establish a tenth regime of processing among these nine operations. It reactivates the same singular cause passing through the symptom. As meanings multiply, it looks at which signifier returns; when an event occurs, which old trace is revived; when the symptom is staged, for which gaze it is performed; when an epochal form is established, why the subject selects precisely this form; when demands are chained together, which difference of enjoyment remains; when identity is repeated, around which lost object it revolves; when communication is repaired, which malfunction is reproduced; when the network is completed, which knot remains the same; when data proliferates, which cause returns again.

The common product of the nine deviations is the symptom’s becoming processable. The Mysticist deviation makes it interpretable, the Eventist deviation renewable, the Dadaist deviation spectatable, the Culturalist deviation formable, the Hegemonist deviation articulable, the Performativist deviation identifiable, the Communicationist deviation functionalizable, the Networkist deviation connectable, and the Signalist deviation measurable. Within all these operations, the analytic cut reconstitutes at the center of the symptom the singular cause that returns to the same place.

Die Formel “Dream is the personalized myth, myth the depersonalized dream.”

The Hero with a Thousand Faces bindet diese Erweiterung an ein zeitliches Schema.

Hegemony and Socialist Strategy definiert Artikulation als “any practice establishing a relation among elements such that their identity is modified” [jede Praxis, die eine Beziehung zwischen Elementen herstellt, durch welche ihre Identität verändert wird].

Austins Ausgangspunkt ist schlicht: “the issuing of the utterance is the performing of an action” [Das Äußern der Äußerung ist das Vollziehen einer Handlung].

“My communication must be repeatable—iterable” [Meine Kommunikation muss wiederholbar—iterierbar sein] fasst diesen Schritt zusammen.

“Language must be investigated in all the variety of its functions.”

In Seminar XX heißt es: “Lalangue serves quite other things than communication.”

Turings Formel von 1936 ist äußerst klar: “According to my definition, a number is computable if its decimal can be written down by a machine.”

Die Formel “feedback is a method of controlling a system by reinserting into it the results of its past performance” [Rückkopplung ist eine Methode zur Steuerung eines Systems, indem die Ergebnisse seiner vergangenen Leistung wieder in das System eingespeist werden] bildet den Kern des kybernetischen Kreislaufs.
