Freudo-Marxism is an attempt to think human desire and enjoyment together with the problems of social production, domination, and emancipation. Freud gave the psychoanalytic side of this undertaking the concepts of drive, repetition, repression, symptom, and the unconscious; Marx opened up the social circulation of production and surplus; Lacan placed lack and objet a at the center of desire. The entire tension of Freudo-Marxism is concentrated in a single question: under what form does the force that sets the human being in motion produce emancipation, and under what form does it enter a new circuit of domination?
This tension produces three great deviations. The line of Melanie Klein, Wilhelm Reich, and Gilles Deleuze–Félix Guattari makes movement dominant across an ever wider field and provides the historical unfolding of Lacan’s Hysteric discourse. The line of Anna Freud, Christopher Lasch, and Jean Baudrillard enlarges norm, limit, and command and provides the three-generational unfolding of the Master’s discourse. The line of D. W. Winnicott, W. R. Bion, and Jacques-Alain Miller enlarges mediation, processing, and knowledge production and provides the three-generational unfolding of the University discourse. The historical constitution of these three lineages was previously mapped in separate studies; here these lineages are connected to their structural positions in Lacan’s discourses. (🔗) (🔗) (🔗)
What Lacan calls discourse is a structure more precise than a manner of speaking. Four terms occupy four distinct places: S₁ is the Master-Signifier that names and orders a field; S₂ is accumulated knowledge; $ is the subject divided by language; and objet a is the surplus-enjoyment left behind in the functioning of discourse and the cause of desire. Quarter-turns of these same four terms produce the Master’s, University, Hysteric, and Analyst’s discourses. The name of the discourse indicates which term occupies the dominant place. (🔗)
In the Hysteric discourse, $ moves into the dominant place and calls S₁ into question. In the Master’s discourse, S₁ moves into the dominant place and puts S₂ to work. In the University discourse, S₂ moves into the dominant place and subjects objet a to knowledge-processing. In the Analyst’s discourse, objet a rises to the dominant place; the divided subject works, knowledge remains in the place of truth, and S₁ is born as the product of the process. Lacan explains the analyst’s position through objet a, the most opaque remainder of discourse, moving into “the place from which discourse is ordered.” (🔗)
The common operation of the three deviations becomes visible precisely here. The left deviation makes $ dominant, the right deviation makes S₁ dominant, and the centrist deviation makes S₂ dominant. Each fills the place occupied by objet a as agent in the Analyst’s discourse with another term. Thus, in the left deviation the remainder is converted into movement, in the right deviation into command, and in the centrist deviation into knowledge-processing. The analytic cut, by contrast, returns the remainder to the dominant place and pushes the other three terms back into their own positions.
Capitalist discourse combines the functions produced by these three deviations within a single accelerated circulation. Lacan describes capitalist discourse as the historical substitute for the Master’s discourse; a small shift of position allows the circuit to reach the rhythm of “ça marche trop vite” [“it works too fast”]. The same capitalist order pushes castration outside symbolic circulation and reconnects lack with successive objects. (🔗) (🔗)
Žižek explains the two visible faces of capitalism through the Hysteric and University poles: everyday capitalist Hysteria constantly demands “always more surplus”; the University pole undertakes the organization of knowledge and power. The Master-Signifier, in turn, provides the coordinates of this circulation. The capitalist circuit thereby links the dissatisfied subject to new S₁s, the S₁s to technical S₂, S₂ to new objects, and the new objects back to the dissatisfied subject. (🔗)
The resistance of the three deviations also acquires meaning within this circulation. The Hysteric deviation turns the obstacle into a reason for new movement. The Master deviation turns crisis into a reason for new regulation. The University deviation turns the remainder into a reason for new knowledge production. Capitalist discourse passes these three forms of resistance into one another and converts every blockage into a new link in circulation. The Analyst’s discourse opens a cut precisely in this chain of transfer: it removes objet a from the position of raw material for movement, command, or knowledge and brings it into the position of the cause that sets the subject to work.
Hysteric Deviation: Movement Becomes Its Own Command
In the basic scene of the Hysteric discourse, the divided subject addresses the Master-Signifier. The subject’s question revolves around its own being, its desire, and what the Other wants from it. As the Master answers, new knowledge is produced; the answer reactivates the subject’s dissatisfaction. Lacan formulates what the Hysteric wants with extreme brevity: “Elle veut un maître” [“She wants a Master”]. The Hysteric subject keeps this Master under question and makes the Master produce knowledge. (🔗)
The three generations of the left deviation develop the same Hysteric movement in three different materials. In Klein, the first material is phantasy; in Reich, it becomes libido; in Deleuze and Guattari, it becomes productive flow. Each generation carries movement into a wider field. Psychic activity expands into bodily and political energy, and energy expands toward social and ontological production.
Melanie Klein’s clinical innovation consists in conceiving early psychic life as a field of intense activity. The infant is transformed from a passive receptive figure into a subject that constructs its own object-world through splitting, projection, introjection, idealization, and aggression. Klein defines one source of idealization as “instinctual desires which aim at unlimited gratification” and constructs the ideal breast as “an inexhaustible and always bountiful breast.” (🔗)
These two expressions expose the first form of Hysteric resistance. The real object provides limited gratification; the phantasmatic measure constructs an Other that carries complete gratification. Each time the real object collides with this measure, it produces new idealization. Frustration becomes the energy source of phantasy. Hysteric demand works in this way: it asks the Other for a complete answer, measures the answer it receives against its own phantasmatic standard, and the resulting difference initiates a new demand.
From the standpoint of the Analyst’s discourse, the decisive difference concerns the position of objet a. Objet a does not mean the ideal object that would complete gratification; it accounts for the surplus-enjoyment remaining around the phantasy of completeness and for the restart of desire. In Klein’s line of deviation, this remainder is drawn into the abundance of the ideal object. Whereas the Analyst’s discourse places the remainder in the position of the cause that puts the subject to work, Kleinian idealization enlarges the phantasmatic image of the object that would gratify the subject. Resistance here turns the object’s inadequacy into a condition of production for phantasy itself.
Capitalist commodity circulation fits easily into the same structure. Each commodity offers a specific use and a specific enjoyment; the phantasmatic ideal promises a completeness exceeding every singular commodity. The acquired object thereby prepares the ground for the next object. The circuit of consumption can use, on a social scale, the demand for unlimited gratification contained in Klein’s logic of the ideal object: every concrete gratification becomes the beginning of a new desire for surplus.
The breaking point of the Kleinian line lies in the source of the ideal object. Once the abundance of the ideal object becomes related less to the physical capacity of the real object than to the subject’s phantasmatic measure, the direction of the demand changes. The analytic question shifts from why the object fails to suffice to how the phantasmatic measure that determines sufficiency is constituted. This shift extracts objet a from the ideal object and places it in the position that explains the repetition of desire.
Wilhelm Reich carries the same Hysteric priority from psychic phantasy into living libidinal movement. His character analysis, sexual economy, and studies of fascism seek an organization of bodily energy beneath visible social behavior. Reich’s fundamental opposition is very clear: “Morality functions as an obligation”; self-regulation, by contrast, follows “the natural laws of pleasure.” Reich further establishes a functional identity between self-regulation and the natural drives. (🔗)
Here the Hysteric discourse becomes political. $ sets its own bodily truth against the moral and social S₁. The question “Why does desire submit to this command?” produces an extensive S₂ concerning family, character, sexuality, and fascist investment. Reich’s real force lies precisely in this Hysteric question: he investigates, on the libidinal level, the gap between material interest and political investment.
The deviation becomes pronounced when libidinal movement is elevated into a positive natural law carrying its own measure. Blockage, armor, and repression become forces standing in the way of the circulation of living energy; the therapeutic and political solution moves toward freer circulation. Every new blockage can indicate a deeper layer of armor, and the theory thereby develops its mechanism of resistance: blockage becomes new evidence for the priority of movement.
The Analyst’s discourse introduces another concept of enjoyment here. Jouissance does not mean merely the pleasure of free flow; it also includes the subject’s investment in its own symptomatic repetition. Objet a does not function like a positive reservoir of energy; it binds loss and surplus-enjoyment at the same point. For this reason, the question that breaks the Reichian deviation shifts from “Which obstacle is holding back the energy?” to “What surplus-enjoyment does the subject produce through the repetition of this blockage?” This shift reconnects libidinal flow to the objet a-centered structure of the Analyst’s discourse.
Capitalist discourse can powerfully incorporate the Reichian movement because capital also lives through circulation, mobilization, and reinvestment. Every fixed bond is loosened, every energy is redirected toward a new target, and every stagnation produces a new call for movement. Reich’s emancipatory aim and the aim of capitalist accumulation move in different historical directions; at the level of discursive operation, the two circuits use the same verb of movement: accelerate the flow, loosen the bonds, recirculate the energy. Lacan’s formula “ça marche trop vite” for capitalist discourse makes this formal proximity striking. (🔗)
In the third generation, Deleuze and Guattari raise the priority of movement to an entirely ontological plane. The fundamental sentence of L’Anti-Œdipe is clear: “Si le désir produit, il produit du réel” [“If desire produces, it produces the real”]. The same passage constructs desire as a machine; partial objects, flows, and bodies become productive components of passive syntheses. (🔗)
The phantasmatic activity in Klein here becomes production of the real. The libidinal energy in Reich here becomes desiring-machine. Movement ceases to remain a property of a specific psychic or bodily field and becomes the principle of production of reality. The three-generational expansion of the left deviation is thus completed: phantasy, libido, and flow carry the same Hysteric priority across ever larger scales.
Deleuze and Guattari also place lack within this order of production. They read lack as an effect of the productive circuit of desire as it is organized in social and natural reality. Thus objet a, which carries the structural cut in the Analyst’s discourse, is drawn into the productive machine. The remainder moves from the position of a symptomatic cause that cuts movement toward the position of a machinic element participating in the production of new connections by movement.
Resistance here acquires an extraordinarily powerful form. Fixity proves the force of the code, the limit proves the need for new deterritorialization, identity proves the demand for new becoming, and blockage proves the need for new flow. Every encounter restarts the theory’s fundamental movement. The question-producing capacity of the Hysteric discourse becomes, on the ontological plane, a capacity for continuous decoding.
The relation to capitalism becomes visible at this point in its own concepts. Deleuze describes capitalism as an axiomatic of decoded and deterritorialized flows; the capitalist process continually produces further decoding and further deterritorialization. (🔗) Capitalism therefore operates by expanding through the dissolution of forms as much as by preserving rigid forms. Flexibility, innovation, connection, movement, and constant transformation can become direct instruments of capitalist accumulation.
Žižek’s reading of capitalism as “permanent self-revolutionizing” strikes precisely at this knot. The capitalist order persists by continually transforming its own limits; it incorporates Hysteric questioning into social reproduction. (🔗) D&G’s ontology of movement encounters its hardest limit here: once deterritorialization becomes an intrinsic capacity of the capitalist machine, movement by itself can no longer provide the measure of emancipation.
The analytic cut enters precisely at this point. The question shifts from the speed and scope of movement to the repetition produced by movement. Which flow reconstructs the same knot of enjoyment? Which deterritorialization reconnects around a new S₁? Which productivity enlarges its own surplus? Through these questions, objet a moves back from being a machine component to the position of symptomatic cause.
The three generations of the left deviation thereby converge in a single law of Hysteric resistance. In Klein, frustration enlarges idealization. In Reich, blockage enlarges the demand for liberation. In Deleuze and Guattari, the limit produces a reason for further movement. Hysteric deviation turns every crisis into the restart of movement; capitalist discourse connects this movement to its own circuit as the motor of “more.”
Master Deviation: Reality Becomes Command
In the Master’s discourse, S₁ occupies the dominant position. S₁ does not carry comprehensive knowledge explaining every detail of a field; it establishes the coordinate that determines which distinctions count as important. Lacan gives the Master’s fundamental desire in the formula “il désire que ça marche” [“he wants things to work”]. The Master puts S₂ to work, and this work produces a remainder. (🔗)
Across the three generations of the right deviation, S₁ moves onto an ever wider scale. In Anna Freud, developmental norm and ego mastery; in Lasch, limit and authority; in Baudrillard, code and command model form three levels of the same operation. In the first generation, the subject is measured; in the second, society is reweighted; in the third, the model becomes the principle of production of reality.
Anna Freud’s developmental lines display this structure clearly. The child’s condition is placed against the background of “a developmental norm”; development proceeds from dependence toward adult self-reliance. The same text describes this movement as “increasing ego mastery of his internal and external world.” (🔗)
The form of S₁ here is extremely concrete: maturity, normality, responsibility, self-reliance, mastery. Clinical knowledge works under these coordinates. Defense, developmental stage, drive, object relation, and behavior are evaluated according to the subject’s position along these lines. The command function of the Master’s discourse thus appears less as a crude order than as the norm determining the correct direction of development.
Anna Freud’s line “from play to work” also exposes this directive logic. Play and drive gratification are progressively connected to ego activity, planning, result-orientation, and the capacity for work. The reality principle becomes one of the developmental conditions of adult work. (🔗)
The mechanism of resistance works differently here from the Hysteric line. Anomaly generates a call for more detailed evaluation rather than directing itself at the developmental norm itself. A child’s difficulty at a particular point produces a new developmental measurement, a more detailed analysis of defenses, and a more comprehensive ego assessment. S₁ preserves its dominant place; S₂ becomes increasingly refined.
The Analyst’s discourse reverses this rotation. In analysis, S₁ emerges as a product from the subject’s own discourse rather than functioning as a pre-given developmental norm. The signifier organizing the subject’s coherence appears during the process. Because the Anna Freudian deviation moves this product into the initial coordinate, it predetermines one of the most important outcomes of the Analyst’s discourse.
From the standpoint of capitalist discourse, these S₁s provide a powerful language of self-management. Self-reliance, bodily management, capacity for work, and adaptation to reality easily connect to the everyday discipline of the subject required by capitalist production. As explicit command recedes, the subject begins to manage its own time, body, performance, and affect. The Master’s command can thereby be translated into internal performance measures.
The breaking point of the Anna Freudian line lies in the origin of the norm. When “maturity” and “adaptation” function like the direct voice of nature, S₁ conceals itself. Making these terms visible as historical and discursive choices shakes the dominant position of S₁. The analytic question investigates which signifiers the subject uses to organize its own life instead of classifying the subject according to a ready-made norm. S₁ is thereby moved back toward the position of product.
Christopher Lasch carries the same rightward operation from the clinic into culture. His fundamental question concerns the weight of the social world more than individual ego mastery. The dissolution experienced by modern society in the bonds of family, history, generation, authority, and work becomes the basic problem of the subject’s relation to the external world.
Lasch places the human being’s relation to “limits inherent in the human condition” at the center of maturation. The social conditions of modern narcissism are concentrated in a culture that extends dependence into adult life while simultaneously multiplying phantasies of total gratification. (🔗)
This thought provides the second generation of the Master’s discourse. S₁ ceases to be the individual developmental line and becomes the signifiers of authority, generation, and limit that sustain the enduring world of society. Anna Freud’s “mastery” becomes “authority” and “limits” on the social scale. The weight of reality spreads into the historical world outside the subject.
Lasch’s analysis of bureaucratic modernity makes this operation even more visible. The new manager who replaces overt authority preserves hierarchy through subtler methods and performs the function of “keeping them in their place” by other techniques. (🔗) Lasch sees very clearly here how modern power slides between the Master and the University; his own direction of solution turns toward the weight of explicit responsibility, limit, and legitimate authority.
The mechanism of resistance operates through restoration. Social dissolution produces a demand for stronger limits. The erosion of authority enlarges the need for rational authority. Historical discontinuity increases the value of continuity. Every crisis supplies new material to the basic verb of the right deviation: give renewed weight to the S₁ that will sustain reality.
From the standpoint of the Analyst’s discourse, the problem lies in the structural fissure of the big Other. The analytic process makes visible authority’s own remainder and its own symptom. Laschian restoration, by contrast, tends to regulate social anxiety through heavier S₁s. The analytic cut opens the following question here: what new symptom does restored authority produce? This question confronts S₁ with its own remainder and pushes the initial norm back toward the position of result.
Capitalist discourse uses this rightward function together with Hysteric dissolution. Capitalism produces constant innovation, mobility, and connection on one side; on the other, it establishes norms that stabilize performance at the levels of corporation, state, platform, and institution. Hysteric expansion requires Master coordinates. Lasch’s emphasis on limit and authority establishes a formal affinity with this second pole of the capitalist machine.
In the third generation, Jean Baudrillard transfers the Master-Signifier from person and tradition to system. In the order of simulation, reality operates within the production of codes and models rather than standing ready outside as an independent measure. Baudrillard says that the real is produced through “modèles de commandement” [“models of command”]. (🔗)
This expression condenses the third generation of the Master’s discourse by itself. In Anna Freud, the norm measured the subject. In Lasch, authority established the social limit. In Baudrillard, the model directly produces reality. S₁ leaves behind the form of an order spoken by a single person and settles into code, model, and operation themselves.
Once the real is tied to the model in Baudrillard’s system, reproduction becomes the fundamental characteristic. The code can produce countless instances within the same combinatorial system. Here Lacan’s formula of the Master and Baudrillard’s diagnosis of the total system approach one another: “ça marche” and “modèles de commandement” carry the same operational weight. The important question shifts from the truth of an image toward its function within the system.
Resistance reaches its strongest form of closure here. Even external criticism directed at the system can become another element in the circulation of signs. A claim to move outside the model can turn into a new example demonstrating the system’s comprehensiveness. The total system thereby acquires the capacity to use its own criticism in its own favor.
The objet a of the Analyst’s discourse intervenes precisely in this closure. Objet a does not function like an additional element comfortably accommodated within the system’s totality; it marks the remainder produced by the totality in its own closure. The question that splits Baudrillardian totality arises here: from what position of enunciation is the truth statement about a model that absorbs all referents made? This position of enunciation produces the system’s own remainder and opens a cut inside the total model.
From the standpoint of capitalist discourse, Baudrillard is the clearest figure of the third generation. Capitalism continually constructs the real inside operational models through products, images, brands, data, and financial signs. The capitalist circuit that Lacan says “ça marche trop vite” shares the same logic of speed with Baudrillard’s production of models. Work, circulation, and reproduction bind the question of truth to their own rhythm.
The three generations of the right deviation thereby converge in a single Master resistance. In Anna Freud, anomaly calls for a more exact norm. In Lasch, dissolution calls for stronger authority. In Baudrillard, every element coming from outside is incorporated into a more comprehensive model. Every crisis turns into a new strengthening of S₁; capitalist discourse uses these S₁s to determine the direction and measure of circulation.
University Deviation: Knowledge Turns the Remainder into Its Own Input
In the University discourse, S₂ moves into the dominant place. Lacan describes this structure with extreme directness at Vincennes: “quand le savoir prend le manche” [“when knowledge takes the helm”]. In the University discourse, knowledge is directed at objet a; the visible face is expertise and method, while the decision-making force of S₁ operates in the place of truth. (🔗)
Žižek explains the fundamental power effect of this structure through the presentation of a normative decision in the form of neutral knowledge. In the University discourse, expertise pushes its own political and normative foundations downstairs; measurement, diagnosis, method, and data speak upstairs. University discourse therefore becomes one of the principal forms of modern administration. (🔗)
The three generations of the centrist deviation progressively enlarge this dominance of S₂. In Winnicott, knowledge serves to hold the environment. In Bion, knowledge becomes a processing apparatus. In Miller, knowledge becomes an epistemic network that turns its own product back into the input of further knowledge production.
Winnicott’s concept of holding provides the basic verb of the first generation. In the early phase of its relation to the environment, the infant does not yet possess a unity capable of regulating its own experience by itself; the holding environment establishes continuity and regulates the intensity of the impingements encountered by the infant. Winnicott describes the basic function of holding as “the reduction to a minimum of impingements.” (🔗)
This concept introduces a powerful clinical intervention. The problem is sought not only in the subject’s internal world; the environment’s capacity to hold becomes part of the analytic process. Potential space and play establish an intermediate field that makes the relation between inside and outside livable. The fundamental verb of the centrist deviation appears here: hold the antagonism.
S₂ has not yet assumed the form of an explicit classification machine; nevertheless, a technical position of knowledge concerning the environment begins to become dominant. How much adaptation, what intensity of impingement, under what conditions play, and at what rhythm separation should occur become matters of mediating knowledge. Conflict increasingly becomes a problem tied to the functioning of the environment.
Resistance also arises within this mediation. Crisis can be converted into a need for better holding. Impingement produces a call for better adaptation. Difficulty in the capacity for play enlarges the search for better environmental holding. The limit of the mediating apparatus can thereby produce a new justification for expanding that same apparatus.
The Analyst’s discourse assumes a different position here. Objet a does not mean a quantity of impingement to be reduced by the environment; it is the cause of the remainder that continually returns in the subject’s discourse. Rather than treating certain collisions with the aim of softening them, the analytic process opens the relation of recurring excess to the subject’s desire. The question that breaks the Winnicottian deviation therefore shifts from how well the environment holds to which remainder returns after all operations of holding.
Capitalist administration can readily translate this logic of holding into its own language. User experience, employee engagement, friction reduction, flexible environments, support systems, and continuous participation carry the same administrative verb: arrange the environment so that the process continues. Winnicott’s clinical aim belongs to a different ethical context from these administrative techniques; insofar as its discursive form tends to hold conflict within a more functional environment, it can be articulated with the adaptive logic of capitalist administration.
In the second generation, Bion turns mediation directly into a processing machine. Alpha-function transforms raw sensory and emotional experience into psychic material usable for thought. A short part of Bion’s own formulation is extremely revealing: alpha-elements are “made available for thought.” (🔗)
Here the S₂ → a structure of the University discourse becomes almost clinically visible. S₂ functions like an apparatus; it takes raw excess, transforms it, and makes it available for memory and thought. The analytic process is thereby conceived as a machine that establishes a capacity for psychic digestion rather than merely producing interpretation.
The mechanism of resistance is powerful. Experience that cannot enter thought requires processing. When processing falters, more developed containment is required. When raw experience reappears, the working capacity of alpha-function is investigated. The limit encountered by the processing apparatus can thus become evidence for the need for further processing.
From the standpoint of the Analyst’s discourse, the critical distinction appears here. In the analytic arrangement, S₂ is in the place of truth and objet a is in the position of agent. In the Bionian deviation, S₂ becomes the agent and the excess carried by objet a becomes an input to be processed. The epistemic status of the remainder changes: the cut that makes the subject speak becomes material to be transformed by the apparatus of knowledge.
The capitalist knowledge economy loves exactly this form of operation. Data is captured, processed, classified, made into usable output, and generates new inputs. Emotion, attention, behavior, and experience are increasingly translated into processable signals. Bionian processing and data capitalism do not share the same aims; the discursive homology is strong: turn raw excess into usable output.
The analytic cut opens this circuit at the limit of processing capacity. If the same knot repeats as processing increases, the status of the remainder changes. The question moves from “Which process remained incomplete?” to “Which element is born again at the end of every process?” This shift moves objet a back from the status of input into the position of agent.
In the third generation, Jacques-Alain Miller raises processing to the level of stimulation. Knowledge no longer merely transforms existing material; it produces its own concepts, gathers new meanings around them, and recirculates the resulting material into epistemic circulation. Regarding the term ordinary psychosis, Miller says “J’ai inventé un signifiant” [“I invented a signifier”] and explains that he wanted this signifier to grow and expand: “Je voulais qu’il prenne de l’ampleur” [“I wanted it to gain breadth”]. (🔗)
This sentence provides the logic of stimulation in pure form. The concept is put into circulation to produce new clinical distinctions, new subtle signs, new readings of cases, and new conversations rather than to place a final point. The concept expands its own epistemic environment.
University discourse reaches its third-generation form here. In Winnicott, the environment held experience. In Bion, the apparatus processed experience. In Miller, the epistemic network turns its own product back into a call for processing. The products of knowledge become inputs for new knowledge production.
The mechanism of resistance develops accordingly. A conceptual impasse produces a call for a new category. Cases that fit and exceed the category generate new distinctions. Clinical uncertainty becomes material for new conversation. Every limit encountered by knowledge production can thus become a new field of activity for the same network.
Miller’s statements on institutions also make the hidden S₁ of the University discourse visible. Regarding an analyst’s institutional title, he says “l’École le réglemente, le décide, en fixe les conditions” [“the School regulates it, decides it, and determines its conditions”]; the same institution guarantees the quality of practice. (🔗) The epistemic movement of S₂ works above; the regulatory decision of S₁ works below. Lacan’s matheme of the University discourse thereby becomes extremely concrete on the institutional scale.
The blockage of the Analyst’s discourse is twofold here. S₂ leaves the place of truth and rises into the dominant position of production; objet a, in turn, becomes an object stimulating epistemic activity. Once the clinical remainder becomes fuel for the knowledge network, the analytic cut is continually returned to circulation through stimulation.
Capitalist discourse uses the same logic of reproduction in the product economy. The product creates demand, demand creates data, and data creates a new product; every output becomes a new input. Millerian epistemic stimulation bears a strong formal affinity with the knowledge-form of this circulation. Knowledge production creates new problems that justify its own expansion.
The breaking point of this line lies in the appearance of the S₁ beneath S₂. While the knowledge network bears the appearance of free conversation, institutional decisions determine which concept counts as valid, which title is granted, and which practice receives a guarantee. Once these decisions become visible, the “neutral knowledge” surface of the University discourse encounters its own command structure. What Žižek calls the “constitutive lie” of the University discourse is precisely this fissure: political and institutional decision circulates in the form of objective knowledge. (🔗)
The three generations of the centrist deviation thereby converge in a single law of resistance. In Winnicott, crisis calls for better holding. In Bion, raw experience calls for stronger processing. In Miller, an epistemic impasse produces more stimulation. University deviation turns every remainder into a new object of work; capitalist discourse uses this processing capacity for data, expertise, optimization, and continuous innovation.
Capitalist Discourse: The Three Deviations Unite in a Single Circuit
Lacan’s four discourses operate through quarter-turns. Capitalist discourse is a special mutation of this arrangement. In 1972, Lacan says that a small inversion in the Master’s discourse accelerates the circuit extraordinarily: “ça marche comme sur des roulettes” [“it runs as if on wheels”] and “ça marche trop vite” [“it works too fast”]. In the same talk, he presents the system’s production of its own exhaustion through its own consumption by means of the wordplay “ça se consomme … ça se consume” [“it is consumed … it consumes itself”]. (🔗)
Another determining feature of capitalist discourse is the rejection of castration. Lacan calls this operation “le rejet de la castration” [“the rejection of castration”]. Castration here refers less to an anatomical fact than to the structural limit of desire, the lack operating within every gratification, and the fissure in the Other’s own closure. Whenever capitalist discourse encounters this limit, it produces a new object, a new solution, a new service, and new knowledge. (🔗)
The three deviations provide the three principal functions of this circuit. Hysteric deviation turns dissatisfaction into movement. Master deviation provides the S₁ that coordinates movement. University deviation organizes technical knowledge and object production beneath this S₁. The produced object promises a new surplus-enjoyment; experience exposes a new lack, and Hysteric demand begins again.
The circuit is therefore broader than simple consumption. Dissatisfaction produces a demand for a new solution; the solution is named by S₁; S₂ designs, measures, and processes this solution; a new object a emerges; the object carries the subject, together with short-term gratification, into a new circuit of desire. The rhythm $ → S₁ → S₂ → a → $ thus provides the libidinal schema of capitalist circulation.
Klein brings into this circuit the phantasy of unlimited gratification through the ideal object. Reich brings the verb of liberation that accelerates energy circulation. Deleuze and Guattari bring the capacity for continuous connection, decoding, and deterritorialization. All three can be attached to the “more” motor of capitalist Hysteria.
Anna Freud brings the S₁s of self-management and mastery. Lasch brings the regulatory S₁s of limit and authority. Baudrillard raises the S₁ of command model and operationality to the scale of the system. All three can be attached to capitalist circulation’s need for direction, norm, and coordinates.
Winnicott brings the capacity for environmental adjustment and friction reduction. Bion brings a model of processing that transforms raw experience into usable material for thought. Miller brings a logic of stimulation that returns the product of knowledge to knowledge production. All three can be attached to capitalist circulation’s capacity for expertise, data, and optimization.
The great power of resistance of capitalist discourse lies precisely here. When the Hysteric pole is blocked, the Master produces a new target. When the Master coordinate generates a crisis, the University apparatus develops a new technical solution. When the product of the University apparatus creates new demand and new dissatisfaction, the Hysteric circuit opens again. The crisis of one discourse becomes the input of another.
Žižek’s reading of capitalism as a tension between Hysteric discourse and University discourse is powerful for this reason. On one side stand continuous self-revolutionizing, continuous expansion, and the reinvestment of surplus; on the other stand expert administration, knowledge-power, and the processing apparatus. Master-Signifiers determine the coordinates of these two poles. (🔗)
Capitalist discourse can also imitate the appearance of the Analyst’s discourse. The model of contemporary civilization that Žižek discusses through Miller approaches, on the surface, the form a → $ / S₂ → S₁: the object of enjoyment sets the subject in motion, expert knowledge operates on the level of truth, and the result is a new S₁ in the form of self-management. (🔗) The fundamental difference lies in the function of objet a. Analytic a makes the fissure in the subject and the big Other speak; capitalist a becomes the stimulus of the call to enjoyment and performance.
This pseudo-analytic order is easily visible in contemporary cultures of self-management. The subject’s stress, anxiety, attention problem, or performance difficulty is processed by expert knowledge; new techniques, new routines, and new identity signifiers are produced; the subject enters circulation again in a more efficient form. The analytic appearance acquires a capitalist function here. Lacan’s warning that psychoanalytic discourse itself can be drawn into the service of capitalist discourse therefore has central importance. Capitalism uses not only its own explicit institutions; it can also turn practices capable of producing its own interruption into techniques of circulation.
Analyst’s Discourse: The Remainder Becomes Agent Again
The difference of the Analyst’s discourse does not arise from its offering a more correct doctrine; it arises from changing the positions of the terms. Lacan defines the analyst’s position through objet a. When objet a moves into the dominant place, the analyst leaves the position of the Master who dispenses knowledge and enters the position of the cause that enables the subject to produce its own discourse. (🔗)
The upper line of the analytic matheme contains a → $. The remainder puts the divided subject to work. On the lower line, S₂ occupies the place of truth and S₁ emerges as product. This arrangement produces a distinct counter-move against each of the three deviations.
In the Hysteric deviation, $ occupies the dominant position. The subject’s movement, question, and demand continually produce new Masters. The Analyst’s discourse uses the same Hysteric movement; Lacan describes analytic experience as a “hysterization of discourse.” (🔗) It then connects the dominance of movement to the causal position of objet a. The phantasmatic measure in Klein’s ideal object, the jouissance of repetition in Reich’s energy, and the remainder of reattachment in D&G’s flow thereby become visible.
In the Master deviation, S₁ occupies the dominant position. The Analyst’s discourse moves S₁ into the position of product. Lacan says that “another style of Master-signifier” can emerge from analytic discourse. (🔗) The S₁ here does not arrive as the initial command; it emerges as the result of the subject’s analytic work. Anna Freud’s norm, Lasch’s authority, and Baudrillard’s model thereby cease to function as ready-made measures and encounter their own symptomatic moments of production.
In the University deviation, S₂ occupies the dominant position. The Analyst’s discourse pulls S₂ into the place of truth. Knowledge leaves the command position that classifies the subject and processes the remainder; it moves into the position of unconscious knowledge operating beneath the subject’s speech. Winnicott’s holding, Bion’s processing, and Miller’s stimulation thereby encounter their own limits: the remainder returning after every mediation becomes the agent of the analytic process rather than the object of the knowledge apparatus.
The political force of the Analyst’s discourse also emerges here. While the three deviations metabolize their own criticism, the Analyst’s discourse cuts the automatic continuation of metabolism. It does not provide a new Master-answer to a Hysteric crisis; it does not impose a new S₁ on a Master crisis; it does not add a new processing layer to a University crisis. It preserves the pressure of objet a without converting it into a ready-to-circulate product. This cut opens space for the subject to produce its own S₁.
Žižek reads the Analyst’s discourse as a form of revolutionary-emancipatory subjectivity that overcomes the split between Hysteric and University modernity. In the same analysis of the four discourses, he emphasizes that the tension between capitalism’s continuous self-revolutionizing and total administration moves into another arrangement through the Analyst’s discourse. (🔗) Analytic power therefore makes the remainder produced by each of these speak rather than giving movement greater speed, administration stronger command, or knowledge greater capacity.
The Common Law of Resistance
What gives the three deviations longevity is a structural characteristic more fundamental than the simple appeal of their ideas. Each deviation turns its own crisis into an input for its own reproduction. Resistance here leaves behind the meaning of psychological stubbornness and acquires the meaning of discursive metabolism.
Hysteric resistance produces a new question from the inadequacy of the answer. In Klein, frustration produces new idealization; in Reich, blockage produces a new demand for liberation; in D&G, the limit produces new deterritorialization. Hysteric discourse turns its own malfunction into fuel for further movement.
Master resistance turns crisis into a call for new regulation. In Anna Freud, developmental anomaly calls for more detailed normative assessment; in Lasch, social dissolution increases the weight of authority and limit; in Baudrillard, a claim coming from outside the system is absorbed into a more comprehensive model. Master’s discourse turns its own malfunction into a demand for a new S₁.
University resistance turns the remainder into a new object of knowledge. In Winnicott, impingement creates a need for new holding; in Bion, raw experience produces a new call for processing; in Miller, conceptual openness opens a new field of epistemic stimulation. University discourse turns its own limit into new S₂ production.
Capitalist discourse places these three metabolisms in sequence. Hysteric movement produces demand, the Master produces command, the University produces processing, processing produces new surplus, and surplus again produces Hysteric movement. The durability of capitalism lies in this cyclical transfer. Crisis becomes the beginning of new circulation rather than the endpoint that falls outside the system.
The Analyst’s discourse is precisely for this reason the most radical counterpart of the capitalist circuit. Capitalist discourse converts lack into product, service, identity, knowledge, or a performance target. The Analyst’s discourse keeps the remainder produced by lack in the position of the agent organizing the subject’s speech rather than putting it into circulation at the same speed. The movement that the capitalist system calls “rejet de la castration” [“rejection of castration”] encounters the renewed efficacy of castration in the Analyst’s discourse. (🔗)
This difference gathers the historical meaning of the three deviations into a single judgment. The left deviation enlarges the positivity of movement and supplies capitalism with the energy of continuous expansion. The right deviation enlarges the weight of norm and model and supplies capitalism with operational command. The centrist deviation enlarges mediation and processing capacity and supplies capitalism with continuous processing power. All three block the objet a-centered rotation of the Analyst’s discourse at three distinct points; capitalist discourse accelerates its circulation precisely by linking these blockages together.
The constitutive line establishes another operation. Objet a is held in the dominant place without becoming the material of movement, the problem of command, or the input of knowledge. The divided subject is put to work by this remainder; knowledge remains in the place of truth; S₁ is born at the end of the process. The service rendered by the three great deviations to capitalist discourse and their blockage of the Analyst’s discourse are therefore two faces of the same structural event: the capture of the remainder by movement, command, and knowledge. The analytic cut breaks this capture by restoring objet a to the position of agent.
Lacan formuliert in äußerster Kürze, was die Hysterikerin will: „Elle veut un maître“ [„Sie will einen Herrn“].
Derselbe Text beschreibt diese Bewegung als „increasing ego mastery of his internal and external world“ [„zunehmende Ich-Beherrschung seiner inneren und äußeren Welt“]. (🔗)
Anna Freuds Linie „from play to work“ [„vom Spiel zur Arbeit“] legt diese richtungsgebende Logik ebenfalls offen.
