In the history of Marxism and Leninism, left and right deviations name two distinct forms of degeneration within the same founding project. The left deviation treats the correct aim in a state of unmediated purity; it trusts that the revolutionary will, class antagonism, or the demand for emancipation will generate historical form through its own energy. The right deviation, by contrast, gradually turns the existing balance of forces into the measure of the movement; parliament, the state, the market, institutions, or compromise, initially tactical instruments, come over time to determine the limits of the founding aim. Lenin’s 1920 critique of the wings of European communism that treated parliament, trade unions, and tactical compromise as matters of principled contamination, together with the transition to the New Economic Policy in 1921, concretizes the same problem: founding action preserves the aim while working through the form of its realization. (🔗)
The relation between Freud’s pleasure principle and reality principle gives the psychic form of the same structure. The pleasure principle names the psychic tendency toward the discharge of tension and satisfaction; the reality principle postpones this tendency, reroutes it, and shapes it according to conditions. Freudian founding action does not leave pleasure raw; it works through pleasure. Freud’s concept of negation describes the admission of repressed content into consciousness under a negative sign: the content is recognized, while judgment neutralizes it within the existing organization of the ego. The reality principle of the right deviation therefore slides into the form of negation; it gives the demand of reality such weight that it absorbs the founding content by recognizing it.
When this schema is applied to the history of Freudianism, a clear genealogy emerges. Charcot is the cautionary psychic butcher; he turns the human being’s psychic surplus into material for clinical spectacle and classification. Freud is the founding father; he removes the symptom from spectacle and carries it into the conflict within the subject’s speech. Jung is the equivocator; he clouds conflict within the horizon of archetype, wholeness, and the Self. Melanie Klein is the left deviation; by expanding the movement of early phantasy and the world of internal objects, she turns phantasy into the dominant atmosphere of psychic reality. Anna Freud is the right deviation; she systematizes the ego, defense, and development as a technique of psychic administration. Winnicott is the centrist; he soothes antagonism through holding, the transitional object, and the space of play. Bion is the driller; he opens the surplus that the human being involuntarily gives away to a regime of observation, classification, learning, and processing. Lacan is the second founding father; he reconstructs Freud’s discovery through the signifier, lack, drive, the Real, and the cut, extracting it from layers of ego, care, and institutional adaptation. Miller is the stimulationist; he produces interpretation, seminar, transference, and institutional circulation around the Lacanian cut. The central archive of the tribunal established by the IPA/FLŽM corpus for this history of Freudianism is collected here. (🔗) (🔗)
First-generation Freudo-Marxism repeats the same threefold differentiation at the level of politics and the theory of civilization. Reich is the left deviation; while explaining fascist obedience through sexual repression and character armor, he seeks the energy of emancipation in the ready-made libidinal vitality beneath the armor. Marcuse is the founding father; he connects Freud’s pleasure-reality conflict to historical forms of domination and shows that even the release of pleasure can become a technique of administration. Lasch is the right deviation; after diagnosing the dissolution produced by therapeutic narcissism, he turns toward the restorative weight of historical continuity, limits, authority, and bonds. Marcuse’s 1955 intervention reconnecting Freud and Marx, together with his 1964 diagnosis of the administration produced by advanced industrial society through comfort, consumption, and liberalization, forms the center of this generation. (🔗)
Second-generation Freudo-Marxism emerges from the post-1968 crisis of desire, spectacle, consumption, and ideology. Deleuze and Guattari are the left deviation; they establish desire as production and amplify flow, deterritorialization, and multiplicity against lack and fixation. Žižek is the founding father; through Lacan, he reconnects antagonism, phantasy, enjoyment, and ideological identification, and moves action from being a choice within existing coordinates toward the reconstitution of the coordinates themselves. Baudrillard is the right deviation; he extends the operationalization of reality under model, code, and simulation so far that critical negativity breaks away from its founding leverage and turns into melancholic display. Anti-Oedipus in 1972, A Thousand Plateaus in 1980, Simulacra and Simulation in 1981, and The Sublime Object of Ideology in 1989 constitute the fundamental historical thresholds of this second generation. (🔗)
Around these principal genealogies, other intellectual deviations repeat the same conflict in other materials. Fromm represents the right revisionism that pulls the Freudian conflict of drives into the language of humanistic character and social adaptation; Marcuse’s 1955 critique of Neo-Freudian revisionism directly targets this line. Brecht represents didactic counter-stimulation that regulates the spectator’s reaction through the technique of alienation; Benjamin represents the messianic left deviation that condenses the historical moment through shock and montage; Adorno represents inactive negativity that constantly brakes when negativity approaches a founding program; Debord represents the exhibitionism that totalizes the whole social relation under the spectacle. Foucault forms the historical psychic butchery that disperses unconscious conflict across the history of apparatuses and power-knowledge; Derrida forms the deferralism that opens the cut along trace and postponement; Althusser forms the structuralist appropriation that compresses the subject beneath ideological interpellation and structural reproduction; Badiou forms the eventist left deviation that purifies truth around event and fidelity. These secondary lines expand the main genealogy; each makes more visible the specific founding problem carried by the Freud–Lacan–Marcuse–Žižek line. (🔗)
Third-generation Freudo-Marxism forms by looking backward at this past from 2025. On March 12, 2025, IPA/FL appears as the joke of a Freudian-Lacanian revolutionary faction; the analogy between Marxist-Leninist factional language and the psychoanalytic inheritance becomes, for the first time, an explicit organizational persona. (🔗) On April 4, 2025, the IPA/FLŽ founding manifesto turns the Freud–Lacan–Žižek triad into the founding axis; with the addition of Marcuse on November 9, 2025, IPA/FLŽM combines Freud’s symptomatic labor, Lacan’s structural cut, Žižek’s over-identification tactic, and Marcuse’s material negativity into a single program. (🔗) (🔗)
The fundamental judgment of this retrospective is thus clear from the outset. The history of Freudianism and Freudo-Marxism is the history of oscillations between leaving pleasure raw and reality absorbing the founding aim; the founding line consists of interventions that work through pleasure and transform the conditions of reality. The deviations extending from Charcot to Baudrillard use different techniques: spectacle, myth, phantasy, ego administration, holding, drilling, stimulation, libidinal release, restoration, flow, and simulation. Freud, Lacan, Marcuse, and Žižek do not form a school repeating the same answer; they work through the same founding problem on four distinct historical levels.
Turning the Psyche into Spectacle and the Freudian Foundation
The zero point of Freudianism is the Salpêtrière at the end of the nineteenth century. Jean-Martin Charcot treated hysteria as a genuine clinical phenomenon exceeding explanations based on organic lesions; through hypnosis, he demonstrated the appearance and disappearance of symptoms. The same clinical arrangement turned the hysterical body into teaching material before an audience of male physicians. The Tuesday lectures, the division of poses into stages, and the circulation of hundreds of patient photographs in the Iconography of the Salpêtrière tied the visibility of the symptom to evidence of medical authority. When Freud arrived in Paris in 1885, he entered precisely this scene. (🔗)
Charcot’s historical power and psychic butchery converged in the same mechanism: the patient’s surplus became usable within the observer’s order of knowledge. A bodily convulsion, instead of remaining an unknown knot within a person’s own life, was displayed as “the typical stage of hysteria.” The 2026 text Cautionary Psychic Butchery treats this logic as the founding model for the clinical and theoretical regimes of display that followed Charcot. (🔗)
Freud’s foundation begins exactly here. Moving away from the theatrical force of hypnosis, Freud, together with Breuer, developed another mode of work in which the symptom could be traced through narrative, association, repressed representation, and transference. The 1895 Studies on Hysteria, The Interpretation of Dreams, bearing the date 1900, studies of everyday slips, and the technique of free association transformed the patient from a clinical type into a speaking subject. For Charcot, the symptom was verified before the eye; for Freud, the symptom worked in the chain of speech that interrupted its own explanation.
This foundation quickly produced an institution. Around Freud, the Wednesday Psychological Society was founded in 1902, took the name Vienna Psychoanalytic Society in 1908, and at the 1910 Nuremberg Congress the International Psychoanalytical Association was founded, with Carl Gustav Jung elected its first president. Freud’s discovery thus passed from a private clinical technique into an international movement. (🔗)
This institutionalization prepared the ground for Jungian equivocation. Jung carried Freud’s concept of libido from the specific field of sexuality and drive conflict into a broader concept of psychic energy; myth, archetype, collective unconscious, and the Self increasingly settled over the founding antagonism. In 1914, Jung resigned from the presidency of the IPA, and the break with the Freudian movement became definitive. (🔗)
Jung’s equivocation produces a fog that renders conflict meaningful within a higher wholeness. Freud’s symptom is the sign of a specific repression, a specific phantasy, and a specific knot of subjectivity; the Jungian archetype turns the same material into an instance of humanity’s common symbolic inheritance. Charcot bound the patient to the clinical type; Jung binds the subject to the mythological type. In one, the body becomes cautionary material; in the other, conflict becomes a narrative of wholeness.
The revisionism crisis in Marxism during the same years provides the political parallel to this first Freudian split. Bernstein placed capitalism’s capacity for adaptation and parliamentary reforms at the center of historical strategy, thereby redefining the relation between the revolutionary aim and existing institutions. The split between Freud and Jung belongs to another field in terms of content; in formal terms, the same question emerges: will founding antagonism settle into the developmental line of the existing world, or will it rupture the world’s existing order of meaning?
The first material scene of the problem of spectacle that would later develop around Brecht, Benjamin, and Debord was already present in Charcot. Brecht would try to regulate the spectator’s captivation through pedagogical distance, Benjamin would argue that technological reproduction and shock reorganize perception, and Debord in 1967 would call the social relation mediated through images “spectacle.” Charcot’s amphitheater had bound the visibility of the human psyche to the stage of authority before all these aesthetic and political theories. Brecht’s alienation regulates hypnosis through a second technique; Benjamin’s montage condenses the historical fragment through shock; Debord diagnoses the whole of society as a relation organized through images. (🔗)
1920: The Pleasure Principle Broken by Its Own Founder
The First World War confronted Freudian theory and Marxist politics with the same fundamental problem: could the founding principle carry historical reality in its pure form? In 1920, with Beyond the Pleasure Principle, Freud placed at the center the repetition compulsion and the problem of the death drive, which shattered the simple sovereignty of the pleasure principle. Pleasure ceased to be a ready-made source of freedom that could simply be amplified as “more satisfaction”; it became a contradictory drive carrying repetition, loss, pain, and return within itself.
That same year, Lenin targeted the politics of communist purity in Europe with Left-Wing Communism: An Infantile Disorder. When participation in parliament, work in reactionary trade unions, temporary compromises, and tactical retreats were treated as stains contaminating the founding aim, revolutionary will lost its own conditions of reality. Lenin tied Bolshevik success to discipline, mass support, and the capacity to work with concrete relations of force. (🔗)
The New Economic Policy of 1921 showed this structure even more starkly. The grain requisition system of War Communism was replaced with taxation, limited market relations and trade returned, and the party framed this turn as a long-term maneuver reorganizing the material relations of socialist construction. Lenin’s own notes explicitly stressed the distinction between bureaucracy serving politics and politics serving the bureaucratic apparatus. (🔗)
The intersection of Freud and Lenin in 1920–21 is the key to the entire schema of deviation. The left deviation treats pleasure, desire, or the revolutionary aim as correct independently of the form of its realization. The right deviation turns existing reality into the final judge of that aim. Founding action performs a third operation: while preserving the aim, it changes its form and reorganizes the existing coordinates of reality.
Melanie Klein, Anna Freud, and Wilhelm Reich began, precisely in this period, to pull Freud’s inheritance in three different directions. In child analysis, Klein carried play, early phantasy, aggression, and internal object relations into increasingly earlier psychic stages. Anna Freud established another line centered on child analysis, the ego, and defense. Reich moved from the Vienna psychoanalytic milieu toward sexual politics, character analysis, and communist organization. By the end of the 1920s, Freudianism’s left deviation, right deviation, and the first Freudo-Marxist left deviation had formed on the same historical stage.
Klein and Anna Freud: Freudianism’s First Open Left-Right Split
Melanie Klein moved to London in 1926 at the invitation of Ernest Jones. On March 19, 1927, Anna Freud spoke in Berlin on the technique of child analysis; the Melanie Klein Trust record describes this presentation as an open attack on Klein’s method. That same year, Klein presented her radical theses on the early stages of the Oedipus complex at the Innsbruck IPA congress. (🔗)
The substance of this conflict exceeded technical detail. Klein held that the child’s play directly supplied analytic material and that early phantasies and object relations organized the entire psychic scene from the earliest years. Anna Freud gave greater weight to a positive relationship with the analyst, pedagogical preparation, and ego capacity. Child analysis thus became a civil war over how Freud’s founding discovery was to be continued. (🔗)
Klein’s left deviation lies in the expansion of phantasy. Freudian phantasy is a specific scene operating in tension with symptom, desire, repression, and reality. In Klein, internal objects, good and bad object poles, splitting, and early aggression become a powerful atmosphere explaining the whole psychic field. Phantasy here acquires the specific form of the raw “pleasure principle”: the productivity of internal movement expands so far that the resistant specificity of external reality is increasingly read as an extension of the internal drama.
Anna Freud’s right deviation moves in the opposite direction. The systematization of ego defenses, the treatment of child development in stages, and the pedagogical dimension of analysis turn Freud’s discovery that dethroned the ego into a new scientific inventory of ego management. Repressed content becomes visible, the defense is named, and the ego becomes a more orderly apparatus of administration through this knowledge. The form of right deviation as negation becomes concrete here: conflict is recognized, and the same act of recognition absorbs the founding consequence of the conflict.
The 1936 The Ego and the Mechanisms of Defence systematized this line. During the war years, Anna Freud’s work through the Hampstead War Nurseries linked child development, care, and institutional practice, allowing this right deviation to merge with the language of modern care organization. Klein, meanwhile, strengthened her theory of internal objects moving toward the paranoid-schizoid and depressive positions. The two poles produced separate clinical regimes from within Freud’s single movement.
Fromm represented the broader Neo-Freudian right revisionism of the same period. As the hard antagonism of drive theory softened toward categories such as social character, love, productive personality, and the healthy society, Freud’s founding scandal was turned into a problem of cultural adaptation. At the end of Eros and Civilization in 1955, Marcuse targeted Neo-Freudian revisionism and treated Fromm as one of the central examples of this transformation; he made the dilution of the radical content of Freud’s psychological critique within an ethic of social adaptation the focus of the attack. (🔗)
Reich: The Left Deviation of First-Generation Freudo-Marxism
Wilhelm Reich did not unite Freud and Marx through abstract similarity; he lived psychoanalysis, the workers’ movement, sexuality, and the problem of fascism within the same organizational life. During the 1920s he conducted technical work within the Vienna Psychoanalytic Society, developed character analysis, participated in sexual counseling activities, and moved to Berlin in 1930, expanding Sexpol work around the KPD. In 1933, The Mass Psychology of Fascism attempted to explain fascist mass behavior at the intersection of economic interest and libidinal attachment. That same year he was expelled from the KPD, followed by his rupture with psychoanalytic institutions. (🔗)
Reich’s question was the genuine founding question of Freudo-Marxism: why does a human being invest desire in an authority contrary to their own material interests? Economic class position alone cannot resolve this question; nor can the unconscious be treated as an internal world independent of forms of social power. Reich’s innovation lay in connecting these two fields on the same body.
The left deviation appeared in the form of the answer. The theory of character armor and sexual repression increasingly turned the living libidinal energy compressed under domination into the ready-made material of emancipation. As the armor loosened, an increasingly direct link was established among vitality, pleasure, and social freedom. The orgone theory Reich developed in the United States after 1939 extended this conception of raw energy as far as the claim of a measurable cosmic energy. (🔗)
Reich’s left deviation therefore carries the same formal problem as the politics of purity targeted by Lenin in 1920. Mediation appears as contamination; the correct energy beneath repression becomes the sufficient ground of emancipation. Freud’s 1920 intervention, by contrast, shows that the drive carries repetition and death within itself. Marcuse would later carry this fissure onto the political plane and show that liberated pleasure can be used directly by domination.
1933–1946: Exile, War, Containment, and Drilling
The year 1933 changed the material geography of European psychoanalysis and Marxist thought. Nazi rule dispersed the German and Central European centers of the Freudian movement; Reich went into exile; the Frankfurt Institute for Social Research left Germany; Marcuse joined the Institute that same year and later moved to the United States. Freud and Anna Freud moved from Vienna to London in 1938. These forced displacements gave the subsequent theoretical divisions a direct institutional form. (🔗)
Klein and Anna Freud now confronted one another inside the same British Psychoanalytical Society. The Controversial Discussions, conducted over eleven meetings between 1942 and 1944, systematically placed Klein’s theories and the objections of Anna Freud’s circle on the table. Following the discussions, a third Independent group became distinct; Winnicott, Michael Balint, and Marion Milner were associated with this intermediate cluster. (🔗)
Winnicott’s centrism is the direct child of this institutional conflict. Holding environment, good-enough mother, transitional object, and playing draw both Klein’s internal war and Anna Freud’s ego management into a portable intermediate space. “Transitional Objects and Transitional Phenomena,” published in 1953, describes the infant’s passage from the experience of omnipotence toward a more realistic relation with the external world through the transitional object. (🔗)
The resulting centrism is a buffer regime that reduces the pressure of antagonism. The cut becomes holding, separation becomes transition, conflict becomes play. Winnicott’s clinical language acquires a psychic form compatible with the postwar institutions’ desire for care, continuity, and reintegration. The IPA/FLŽ tribunal codes this line as a centrist deviation that covers the traumatic core of the unconscious within a “healing false wholeness.” (🔗)
Bion emerges from a far harsher technical vein of the same war. In 1942, the British War Office Selection Boards system subjected officer candidates to several days of tests, command situations, and leaderless group tasks. Bion was the board psychiatrist; the candidate’s “set problem” and the “real problem” the psychological observer was trying to solve about the candidate overlapped on the same scene. This system, through which more than 125,000 candidates passed, established a large psychotechnical apparatus that converted behavior into selection knowledge. (🔗)
Bion’s drilling is grasped from this point. While carrying out a task, a person produces behavior in excess of the result of that task; from this surplus, the observer extracts information about leadership, competition, dependency, cooperation, and position within the group. After the war, Bion carried this epistemic form into group dynamics, psychosis, and the theory of thinking. Experiences in Groups in 1961, Learning from Experience in 1962, Elements of Psycho-Analysis and the Grid in 1963, Transformations in 1965, and Notes on Memory and Desire in 1967 produced new technical instruments of the same line. (🔗)
Alpha-function strengthened the processing capacity that would turn raw experience into thought; container/contained strengthened the relation by which psychic material is carried and transformed; the Grid strengthened the coordinates that classify the levels of use and abstraction of psychic material. In Bion’s late period, the weight of memory and desire within the analyst’s field of observation became a target; the drilling device began to monitor its own filter as well. IPA/FLŽM’s critique of Bion reads this chain through the conversion of what is revealing into what is serviceable: the surplus spilling out of human activity is converted into information possessing a higher use-value. (🔗)
Bionian drilling thus forms a vertical deviation distinct from Klein’s left deviation, Anna Freud’s right deviation, and Winnicott’s centrism. Klein expands psychic movement, Anna Freud manages it, Winnicott holds it, Bion extracts data from it. The Freudian status of psychic surplus as exceeding its own use-value is pulled here toward the language of processing, learning, and capacity.
The same problem took different forms in wartime aesthetic and political theories. Brecht’s alienation managed the spectator’s emotional absorption through a second theatrical technique, while Benjamin’s montage and conception of now-time condensed historical continuity into moments of shock. Adorno diagnosed how the culture industry produced managed intimacy and ready-made consumption, while repeatedly withdrawing at the moment when negativity approached transformation into a positive founding program. These three figures do not join the founding line; one produces pedagogical counter-stimulation, one messianic montage, and one a negativity that struggles to pass into founding action. (🔗)
Lacan and Marcuse: Two Postwar Refoundations
As postwar psychoanalysis gained an emphasis on ego, development, adaptation, holding, and institutional training, Lacan established the return to Freud as a structural intervention reproducing the fissure in Freud’s discovery. Training conflicts within the Paris Psychoanalytic Society led to a split in 1953; Lacan moved into the circle of the Société Française de Psychanalyse. Continuing disputes with the IPA over training and session technique culminated in a second rupture in 1963–64, and Lacan founded the École Freudienne de Paris in 1964. (🔗)
Lacan’s founding work reconstructed the unconscious as the structure of the signifying chain rather than as the deep content of the ego. The mirror stage showed the ego’s alienation in its own image; object a showed the lost cause in desire’s attempt to complete itself; the drive, by deviating from the line toward a biological aim, showed its own satisfaction in circuitous repetition. In his 1964 seminar, while stating that the unconscious is structured like a language, Lacan simultaneously emphasized that sexuality becomes subjectivized through the partial drives. (🔗)
This refoundation simultaneously cuts through Anna Freud’s ego management, Winnicott’s holding center, and Bion’s processing regime. When analysis is tied to the subject gaining a more robust ego, finding a safer environment, or developing a more efficient capacity for thought, Freudian conflict is surrendered to a criterion of outcome. Lacan’s concept of the “analytic act” reverses this result: rather than making the existing subject act more effectively in the existing world, the act carries a cut that changes the conditions of the beginning. The 1967–68 seminar The Psychoanalytic Act addresses this question at the same historical moment as the events of May 1968. (🔗)
Marcuse made the founding move of Freudo-Marxism in the same postwar world. Eros and Civilization in 1955 opened Freud’s conflict between civilization and the drives onto historical forms of domination. By distinguishing Freud’s reality principle from the performance principle of a specific society, Marcuse broke the view that treated all repression as a single necessity; he moved the problem of freedom from the raw release of pleasure to the material organization of production, labor, time, and needs. (🔗)
This move cuts through Reich’s left deviation from within. Sexual energy, pleasure, or the body do not by themselves provide the measure of freedom; historical society organizes the form in which this energy circulates, which need counts as a need, and which satisfaction reproduces domination. Marcuse’s Freudo-Marxist foundation works precisely because it works through the pleasure principle without surrendering it to an ethic of repression.
The critique of Neo-Freudian revisionism at the end of the 1955 book attacks the right deviation at the same time. As Fromm and other Neo-Freudian lines translate Freud’s hard metapsychology into the language of human relations, character, and cultural adaptation, the power of psychoanalysis as social critique is domesticated. Marcuse returns to Freud while also undertaking Freud’s historical reworking; fidelity advances the historical consequence of the formula rather than preserving its old form. (🔗)
The 1964 One-Dimensional Man is the second stage of this founding line. Advanced industrial society can produce a soft, comfortable, and reasonable unfreedom; consumption, technology, sexual liberalization, and standards of living can cease to be rivals of domination and become its vehicles. Marcuse’s concept of repressive desublimation thus provides the central measure against all left deviations of Freudo-Marxism: pleasure can circulate, energy can be released, options can multiply, and all of these can simultaneously serve the reproduction of the system. (🔗)
1968: Founding Action, Spectacle, and Desire on the Same Stage
France in 1968 brought the student movement and massive workers’ strikes together in the same political crisis. The general strike of May 13, factory occupations, and the strike wave that reached millions within days turned university authority, workplace discipline, the state, culture, and everyday life into a common field of conflict. The INA archives record a nationwide stoppage reaching seven million strikers and the convergence of the student and workers’ movements. (🔗)
By this historical moment, Marcuse had already shattered the easy formula equating the release of pleasure with freedom. Lacan, meanwhile, was working on the analytic cut that separated action from activity within the existing order. 1968 politically united these two founding questions: how does desire move, and at what moment does movement establish a new coordinate?
With The Society of the Spectacle in 1967, Debord had totalized the image and commodity dimension of this crisis. Rather than treating spectacle as a mere collection of images, he described it as a social relation mediated through images; he understood the way commodity circulation carried social life into the form of appearance as a total regime of separation. This diagnosis sharpened the link between commodity and image while also producing a tendency to gather the whole of society beneath a single logic of spectacle. (🔗)
Foucault attacked the Freudian language of repression from another front. As he read the histories of sexuality, madness, the clinic, and punishment as the productive activity of power-knowledge apparatuses, the division of the subject became a product of the history of apparatuses. Cautionary Psychic Butchery treats this movement as the historical expansion of Charcot’s clinical amphitheater: Charcot places the hysterical body on the cautionary stage, while Foucault places the history of Western reason’s confinement and normalization there. (🔗)
Derrida pulled Freud’s concepts of memory, trace, and delay in another direction. “Freud and the Scene of Writing,” in the 1967 Writing and Difference, opened the deferred structure of the Freudian trace onto the logic of différance. Along this line, the cut acquires the movement of deferral that links every closure to another trace rather than the force of an act producing closure. (🔗)
Within the same historical milieu, Althusser constituted the subject through ideological interpellation. Ideology hails the concrete individual as a subject; the individual recognizes their place in this hail and functions within material rituals. This structuralist appropriation intensifies, within state apparatuses and reproduction, the problem of misrecognition taken from Freud and Lacan, while compressing the subject’s founding action under the structure’s mechanism of hailing. (🔗)
Each of these French and Frankfurt circles held one part of the same problem that erupted in 1968. Marcuse foregrounded the pleasure-producing form of domination, Lacan the cut of the act, Debord the social organization of appearance, Foucault the productivity of power, Derrida trace and deferral, Althusser ideological hailing. The next Freudo-Marxist generation emerged from among these fragments.
Deleuze–Guattari: The Completion of the Second-Generation Left Deviation
The post-1968 encounter between Deleuze and Guattari carried Reichian libidinal left deviation into a far more comprehensive ontology. Anti-Oedipus in 1972 was published as a direct attack on the fundamental categories of psychoanalysis; the BnF record describes it as the first volume of Capitalism and Schizophrenia, a series criticizing the foundations of psychoanalysis. A Thousand Plateaus in 1980 expanded the same movement through the concepts of rhizome, assemblage, deterritorialization, and line of flight. (🔗)
D&G’s left deviation is the third stage of the same genealogy as Klein and Reich. In Klein, phantasy operates from the beginning; in Reich, living libido is trapped beneath the armor; in D&G, desire is production from the outset. Lack, law, and the fixed subject thereby cease to be conditions of the energy to be liberated and become forms of capture. Movement, flow, and connection carry their own positive value.
Marcuse’s diagnosis of repressive desublimation had formulated the internal problem of this line years before Anti-Oedipus appeared. Advanced capitalism can incorporate movement, sexual liberalization, novelty, consumption, and the multiplication of options directly into its own reproduction. The direct equation between “flow” and “freedom” thus becomes conducive to reading capitalism’s own dynamism as revolutionary energy.
IPA/FLŽ’s judgment on D&G hardens this point through the unconscious, the clinical subject, and the symbolic cut. Desiring-machines, the body without organs, deterritorialization, and lines of flight are treated as the conceptual instruments of a left deviation that liquidates the subject’s lacking and divided structure. (🔗)
Lefebvre’s critique of everyday life and the Situationist circle’s desire to transform lived experience directly constituted the broader left pressure of the same period. The creativity of everyday life, the reuse of space, and direct experience carried energy against capitalist mediation; when the same energy was treated as self-sufficient, it slid into the spontaneist form of left deviation. Debord placed this spontaneism inside the more disciplined totality of the critique of spectacle, while D&G elevated it onto the ontological level through the concepts of flow and becoming.
Lasch: The Restorative Right Response to Therapeutic Dissolution
The economic crises, political defeats, and post-1968 sense of disintegration in the 1970s produced another Freudo-Marxist direction. In his 1976 essay “The Narcissist Society,” Christopher Lasch considered the dissolution of faith in politics alongside the rise of personal growth, health, psychological security, and therapeutic culture. He described the modern subject as becoming attached to the search for external validation, immediate intimacy, and therapeutic self-improvement. (🔗)
Lasch’s diagnosis captures the cultural outcome of Anna Freudian and Winnicottian forms of administration: the subject becomes an ego that is continuously observed, supported, validated, and managed in the language of expertise. The dissolution of the old prohibitive authority produces a new form of dependence; the need for validation, visibility, and security takes the place of internal limits.
The right deviation becomes distinct in Lasch’s answer. The line of exit turns toward the restorative weight of continuity, limits, authority, family, and historical bonds rather than the creation of a new founding form. Anna Freud represents the right deviation that strengthens the existing ego, while Lasch represents the recall of lost limits against a culture of dissolved ego. The two right deviations occupy different historical positions; their common movement ties the founding beginning to the weight of present or past forms of reality.
Baudrillard: The Hyperreal Closure of the Reality Principle
With The System of Objects in 1968 and The Consumer Society in 1970, Baudrillard entered the problems of consumption, objects, and signs; The Mirror of Production in 1973 targeted the category of production itself; Simulacra and Simulation in 1981 placed the rule of model, code, and simulation over reality at the center. The BnF records the first edition as Paris, Galilée, 1981, and notes that part of the texts came from Traverses writings of 1976–79. (🔗)
Baudrillard completes the second generation’s right deviation. In Anna Freud, reality is the norm to which the ego adapts; in Lasch, lost limits carry the restorative weight that will gather the subject; in Baudrillard, the model produces reality from the outset. The reality principle thereby expands from external conditions toward the entirety of the founding horizon.
The difference from Debord is sharp here. Debord retains spectacle as the historical form of commodity production and social relation; behind the image stand production, separation, and social practice. Baudrillard expands code and simulation so far that critique turns into a regime of observation endlessly displaying the system’s closure. The right deviation reaches the coldest form of negation: the falsity of the system is recognized, and this recognition produces an absoluteness that erases the system’s historically transformable structure.
IPA/FLŽM’s compact history positions Baudrillard as the “melancholist of hyperreality” and a right deviation with weakened leverage. The same text reads D&G and Baudrillard as two poles of the same historical pair: on the left, endless movement is counted as freedom; on the right, the closure of operational reality is absolutized. (🔗)
Post-Lacan Stimulation and the Millerian Deviation
In 1980, Lacan dissolved the École Freudienne de Paris. In his “D’écolage” intervention, he stated that the group effect had glued the school together and that deviations and compromises had burdened the founding gesture; he established the Cause freudienne as a new organizational beginning. The École de la Cause freudienne was founded in January 1981, and Lacan became its first president. (🔗)
When Lacan died on September 9, 1981, he left behind seminars, Écrits, students, institutions, and a vast economy of transference. Jacques-Alain Miller acquired central authority in establishing the texts of the seminars and in building the subsequent Lacanian institutional network. Lacan’s oral teaching increasingly gained continuity around the published seminar series, the school system, and “Lacanian orientation.”
The stimulationist deviation is born precisely within this continuity. Lacan’s cut is an intervention that makes the symbolic chain work differently at a particular moment; the Millerian regime produces continuous explanation, interpretation, seminar, nuance, and style around this cut. The cut is now felt through the intensity of endless conceptual stimulation rather than through the hardness of a singular act.
IPA/FLŽ’s critique of the Millerian deviation calls this transformation a “stimulationist falsification.” Lacan’s structural division and encounter with the Real enter circulation within the choreography of interpretation and seminar aesthetics; founding action becomes an object of pleasure in its own narration. (🔗)
A historical loop thereby closes between Charcot and Miller. Charcot had presented the symptom to the spectator as bodily performance; Millerian stimulation circulates the language of the symptom and the cut as theoretical performance. Freud’s and Lacan’s founding acts are the hard exceptions between these two regimes of spectacle: the first draws the body into the knot of speech, the second binds the endless interpretation of speech to the cut.
Structure, Deferral, and Event: Three Dead Ends Before Žižek
By the end of the 1980s, three powerful tendencies in French and European theory had compressed the founding subject in three distinct ways. Althusserian structure constituted the subject as an effect of ideological hailing and reproduction. Derridean différance amplified the delay and deferral of another trace within every decision. With the 1988 Being and Event, Badiou gave a hard response to these structural and textual closures through event, truth, and fidelity; he tied the founding moment to the event’s pure rupture.
Each of these three lines domesticates the Freudian remainder in a different way. In Althusser, the subject finds its place under the structure’s hail; the dimension of enjoyment in unconscious surplus is compressed behind ideological reproduction. In Derrida, the cut continuously opens onto traces; decision is tied to the movement of other differences. In Badiou, the event becomes the beginning of a higher truth procedure; the drive’s dirty repetition, the stain of phantasy, and the persistent surplus of object a press against the purity of fidelity to the event.
Adorno’s earlier negativity provides another preliminary form of this triple dead end. He preserves negativity against identity-thinking and the culture industry, yet withdraws at the moment negativity turns toward a founding program. This is where Marcuse separates from him: by connecting negativity to labor time, the structure of needs, bodily sensibility, and the conditions of freedom, Marcuse demands material form. Adorno preserves the purity of critique; Marcuse forces critique toward another organization of life.
Žižek: The 1989 Refoundation of the Second Generation
When The Sublime Object of Ideology appeared in 1989, the state forms of Eastern European socialism were entering dissolution. The book reconstructed the problem of ideology through phantasy, symptom, and enjoyment, moving it beyond the level of consciously false belief. As the world order presented itself as post-ideological, Žižek showed that ideology works most powerfully within people’s everyday practices, pleasures, and phantasies rather than merely in their explicit beliefs. (🔗)
Žižek’s founding role lies in cutting through the second generation’s two deviations at once. D&G’s left deviation amplifies the movement of desire and the production of connections as emancipatory positivity; Žižek restores the knot of antagonism and enjoyment within this movement. Baudrillard’s right deviation absolutizes the system’s power of simulation; Žižek shows that the system continually requires a phantasmatic supplement, a symptomatic remainder, and an obscene economy of pleasure to produce its own consistency.
Lacan’s concept of the act gains new political and ideological weight here. Founding action does not mean the most radical choice among ready-made options; it changes the coordinates that determine which options appear possible. The meaning of the act also works backward: at the moment it occurs, it renders the history of its own preconditions readable in another way.
The bond between Marcuse and Žižek strengthens the genuine Freudo-Marxist foundation of the second generation. Marcuse shows that administration can operate through pleasure, consumption, and liberalization; Žižek explains how this administration persists within the subject’s own enjoyment. One gives repressive desublimation, the other ideological enjoyment; together they show that the right deviation operates through a reality principle far more intricate than crude prohibition.
The Founding of the Third Generation
The historical gesture of third-generation Freudo-Marxism first emerged as a joke in March 2025. The March 12 text IPA/FL: Freudian-Lacanian Revolutionary Faction restaged psychoanalytic institutions in Marxist-Leninist factional language; it combined motifs of short analysis, ego domination, institutional bureaucracy, and revolutionary faction within a consciously alternative historical game. This joke already carried the form of the later founding: psychoanalytic history would now be read through the terms of deviation, faction, founding, and counterrevolution rather than merely as academic differences among schools. (🔗)
On April 4, 2025, the IPA/FLŽ founding manifesto turned this joke into a programmatic persona. Freud’s discovery of the unconscious and symptom, Lacan’s structural rupture, and Žižek’s ideological intervention were combined within the same “frontline.” Here the founding triad operated less as a collection of historical persons than as three operators: symptomatic excavation, structural cut, and ideological forcing converging in the same movement. (🔗)
With the addition of Marcuse on November 9, 2025, IPA/FLŽM was founded. This addition shifted the center of gravity of the entire historical schema, because material negativity, free time, needs reclaimed from domination, and a measure of institutional form were added to the Freud–Lacan–Žižek triad of symptom, cut, and ideological forcing. The founding manifesto gathered Freud as symptomatic labor, Lacan as structural formalism, Žižek as over-identification, and Marcuse as procedural negativity within a single program. (🔗)
This third generation orders the past according to the fate of the founding operation rather than the fame of names. Charcot turns suffering into cautionary knowledge. Jung carries conflict into mythological wholeness. Klein expands phantasy into the raw productivity of the whole psychic field. Anna Freud turns the defeat of the unconscious into the ego’s inventory of defenses. Winnicott places antagonism inside a containable transitional space. Bion turns surplus into processable information. Miller inserts the cut into an economy of continuous stimulation. Reich ties the material of emancipation to ready-made libidinal energy. Lasch responds to therapeutic dissolution with restorative limits. D&G amplify the positivity of flow. Baudrillard amplifies the absoluteness of closure.
The founding status of Freud, Lacan, Marcuse, and Žižek rests on another measure. Freud removes the symptom from the usable type and carries it into the place where the subject’s own division operates. Lacan reconstructs this division, domesticated under psychoanalysis’s own institutional inheritance, through structure, lack, and the cut. Marcuse removes the release of pleasure from its status as the measure of freedom and investigates the social organization of pleasure. Žižek removes ideology from its status as an external false idea and reconstructs it within the subject’s phantasy and enjoyment.
The left-right deviation schema of Marxism and Leninism provides the conceptual backbone of this long history. The left deviation treats founding energy as correct without working it through; Klein’s phantasy, Reich’s libidinal vitality, and D&G’s desiring-production constitute three generations of this line. The right deviation turns existing reality into the measure of the founding aim; Anna Freud’s ego administration, Lasch’s restorative limit, and Baudrillard’s hyperreal closure constitute three historical intensities of this line. Winnicott’s center buffers antagonism, Bion’s drilling extracts data from antagonism, and Miller’s stimulation circulates the language of antagonism in a state of continuous excitation.
Founding action does not produce the average of these deviations. It does not seek a reasonable balance between pleasure and reality. Founding action works through pleasure and transforms which form of reality counts as reality. Freud’s capacity to break his own pleasure principle through the discovery of the death drive, Lacan’s capacity to cut institutional Freudianism for the sake of fidelity to Freud, Marcuse’s capacity to return liberated pleasure to the question of domination in the name of emancipation, and Žižek’s capacity to reconstruct ideology and action at a moment of political defeat are four historical forms of the same operation.
Seen retrospectively from Third-Generation Freudo-Marxism, this one-hundred-and-fifty-year line therefore concentrates on a single dispute: what is to be done with the human surplus? Psychic butchery displays it; equivocation integrates it; the left deviation counts it as raw material of freedom; the right deviation binds it to the administration of existing reality; the center soothes it; drilling processes it; stimulation keeps it in continuous circulation. The founding line preserves the abrasive force of this surplus, gives it form, and through this form changes the coordinates of the reality in which we live.
Experiences in Groups 1961, Learning from Experience 1962, Elements of Psycho-Analysis und das Raster 1963, Transformations 1965 sowie Notes on Memory and Desire 1967 brachten neue technische Instrumente derselben Linie hervor.
Charcot verwandelt Leiden in abschreckendes Wissen.
